Image save - Bmp only

G

Greg

I used to be able to save images as jpg with the file
name. Yet lately IE 6 will only allow me to do this as a
BMP file and the file name is always "untitled.bmp". What
changed? I have't installed anything new. This is on
every website I go to also. Is there a way to get it to
offer it as a jpg file with the file name again?

You probably need to clear your cache (Tools>Internet
Options> "Delete Files" button under "Temporary Internet
files"
I have the same problem -- except I've done everything
Microsoft has told me to do (and everything I've read so
far on this forum) and I STILL can't save a picture...even
with a completely empty cache AND all of my "downloaded
program files" deleted...so, I could use some help too...

viewer

SYMPTOMS
When you use the Save Picture As command for a graphics
file in Internet Explorer, you may be able to save the
file only as a BMP file, even if the file is in another
format (such as GIF or JPEG). The file name may also
appear as "Untitled."

CAUSE
There are several reasons why this issue may occur.
This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages
cache is full.
This issue can occur if you have "Do not save encrypted
pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab
and are loading the page over a secure connection (https).
This issue can occur when you connect to a Web site using
an address that contains <username:password>. For example,
the server is accessed through
http://<username:password@site>/default.htm, instead of
http://<site>/default.htm.

WORKAROUND
You can use any one of three methods to work around this
issue.
Workaround for Cause 1
To resolve, delete the temporary internet files by
selecting Tools, Options, General tab and select the
Delete Files button.

NOTE: To locate the Temporary Internet Files folder, click
Options on the Tools menu, click the General tab, and then
click Settings. The current location is indicated in the
Settings dialog box.

Workaround for Cause 2
To workaround, uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to
disk" from Tools, Options, Advanced Tab. Then select View,
Refresh to reload the page.

Workaround for Cause 3
Method 1
Open the Temporary Internet Files directory and locate the
image that you attempted to save.
Right click the image and click Open.
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click
the image and click Save Picture As. The correct file type
and name should be correct.
Method 2
Type in the direct path to the image that you wish to save.
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click
the image and select Save Picture As. The correct file
type and name should be correct.
Method 3
You can also save the file in .bmp format, and then use a
graphics editor to convert the file to the desired file
format

Argh -- yep, tried all of that too. It seemed to happen
after I did a Windows Update so I tried reinstalling IE6,
but that didn't change anything. I had installed a couple
of programs around that time, haven't dumped them yet (but
that's probably the next thing I'll try). I installed a
couple of other "freeware" browsers from tucows (BINGOO
and Advanced Browser) but they have the same problem.
Sounds like a systemwide problem to me but I have no idea
what to do about it... Nothing posted on the support page
helped (please believe me -- I tried everything listed and
then some). I'm running Windows 2000 - not an AOL user
(local ISP). Any suggestions are welcome...

Wow, it worked. I cleared the Temp internet files and
walla! Sometimes it's just the simplest things. I wonder
why I haven't run into that before now. Tell you what..I
never would have thought of that to fix the problem.

Thanks for the help, and I hope you get some help
yourself.

Glad it worked for you. I've been having that flaky
problem for a long time now -- can't figure out what the
heck is going on with IE now...sigh...

This is on every website I go to also.

Bill,

Does your "Me too!" include that aspect of Greg's problem description?

Sometimes it happens because the file for the image is non-cacheable.
Have you checked to see if the image you are trying to save is cached?
E.g. use the TIF viewer: press Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V

FYI you can then search the TIF for .jpg by pressing F3
and entering *.jpg in the Search companion file name: input box.

Do you have an example URL of an image you can see is cached
and which you are having trouble saving?

If you find that the image you are trying to save is not cached
you might still be able to get it by opening its URL in its own
window. E.g. use right-click Properties or View, Source to
find the full URL for the image and then open that. You may have
to resolve a relative address and some sites may inhibit you from
seeing their images that way but there is no harm in trying.
