You don't have to put the images in the images folder; you can place them
where ever you like. It just seems logical to have images in an images
folder, for the sake of simplicity.
Mir - You can put your images wherever you want. I have a hiking website
with thousand of pictures. I personally put each trip report in its own
separate directory along with the pictures for that trip.
Lately I've been putting pages in their own folders along with images for
that particular page, images that relate to the overall design of the web i
put into the images folder and also sub folders thereof.
