Image Files

Hi,
I don't know if this is the right group to ask this question but if not I am
sure I'll be directed to the one. I have an image file of some software and
when I use my burnware it makes a copy of it on a CD.
The thing I don't like about it is that there is no executable that will
allow me to install it locally and the only way it'll work is off the CD.
This even though I transferred all the files, [hidden and otherwise] onto a
desktop folder nothing!
Any idea of how to circumvent this problem? Thanks as always!

If it exists, examine the contents of the file Autorun.Inf. It's a little
difficult to follow your post, but you seem to be trying to install a
program from a hard drive copy of the CD ?

The only way is through using a cd/dvd emulator such as daemon tools.
that will let you mount the image file directly off the hard drive
without needing to write it to the cd.

OK I will give this a try, thank you.

My objective is to install the image onto my hard drive and not be forced to
have to work off the CD/DVD since the files once decompressed come to about
230,000! Takes forever to access a CD/DVD that has that many files so if I
install onto my hard drive faster access.

OK I get what this tool did was make a virtual drive..........I have
transferred all those files from the virtual drive onto a hard drive folder
and it appears to be working so far..........on the other hand is there
another tool that will just install the image files onto the hard drive as
opposed to creating a virtual drive?
Thank you.

What type of CD image file is it? - ISO, NRG, etc.

You say "install the image files onto the hard drive" - do you mean "copy
the files stored *in* the image file onto the hard drive"? If so, you need a
program like ISOBuster, UltraISO, WinISO, perhaps WinRAR or 7-Zip - if your
file is an .ISO. Only the last of these is free, though the others probably
have free trial periods.

Or is it that you've installed, say, a game from the mounted image and in
order to play it, you need to have a CD (virtual or otherwise) available to
it?

But - unless you plan on doing this frequently, isn't it just as easy to
mount the image with your already-installed Daemon Tools and copy the files
from the virtual drive? Daemon Tools doesn't need to auto-start, so no drain
on resources.

To answer your question it's an ISO image and yes I want to install this
learning software onto my hard drive so I don't have to go through accessing
the software from the DVD media.
Yeah demon tools creates the virtual drive and I suppose it will always be
accessible there. I was hoping it would become another programs in my
programs folder that I can access it this way.
I did attempt to copy the files from the virtual drive and for some reason
the language files, since it's a language program are not there. They're all
there in the virtual drive but attempting to make a copy even thoughj I have
asked the hidden files are shown, the copying did not work. Any ideas why?
Thank you.

I'm confused by your use of the term "installing". If simply copying files
over from DVD to HDD, then that's "copying". "Installing" is running a file
on the DVD such as setup.exe to actually install the program into your
Windows system. (Is it a CD or DVD, you seem unsure and keep changing
terms!)

Some programs are run directly from the DVD without any such installer
running - although on the first run they may well create a desktop and/or
Start Menu shortcut and make some registry entries. The file that runs them
is the one that R. McCarty suggested you find from the CD/DVD's autorun.inf
file. Open that with Notepad and it'll tell you what kicks the program off.

I'm also confused by your statement "...the files once decompressed come to
about 230,000! Takes forever to access a CD/DVD that has that many files so
if I install onto my hard drive faster access." What's this decompression
you're talking about? The files will be the same in number and take up the
same space if/when copied over to your HDD as they will on the DVD. If there
are more and/or they take up more space, it sounds like you've run an
installer from the DVD that's unpacked them.
Yeah demon tools creates the virtual drive and I suppose it will always be
accessible there. I was hoping it would become another programs in my
programs folder that I can access it this way.

*Installing* the program should do that for you, or you can just create your
own shortcuts there once you've got it working properly.
I did attempt to copy the files from the virtual drive and for some reason
the language files, since it's a language program are not there. They're all
there in the virtual drive but attempting to make a copy even thoughj I have
asked the hidden files are shown, the copying did not work.

Well, this is in conflict with your earlier posts, where you've said: "I
have transferred all those files from the virtual drive onto a hard drive
folder and it appears to be working so far" and, "I transferred all the
files, [hidden and otherwise] onto a desktop folder ".
Any ideas why?

Copy-protection or a faulty ISO or a faulty source disc for the ISO; most
likely the first of these. Or, if you were running the program when
attempting the copy, files in use wouldn't have copied. Did you manage to
copy these "language files" when you copied from the disc you burned from
the ISO? If this is software that you have purchased, is this how it came -
as an ISO?

You could try one of the programs I mentioned before - I think ISOBuster
offers a decent free version. You could extract the files from the ISO with
that and try copying *them* to your HDD. Beyond that, you're looking at some
sort of copy protection-breaking software, which I would hazard is a no-no
for this group. :)

If you actually told us the name of this language learning program, there's
just a chance that someone here has experience with it and can offer advice
from first-hand use.
Thank you.

you can't run cd's directly off the hard-drive no matter what you copy
across without emulating a cd being in the drive.

There is a program called magiciso which i use to open image files and
you can browse them like any other folder, it also lets you create an
iso file by dragging and dropping whatever you want in it.

Yes, you can; I've done it plenty of times. Just not in all cases, and this
looks like being one of them.
