God do I feel stupid...even with a $25 book on Vista, I can't find a simple way
to state what workgroup I want to belong to.

Just bought a laptop that came with Vista...got it setup with a wireless router
(Belkin) to connect to the internet. Now...since my desktop is also connected
to the router....all I want to do is share files between the two computers by
belonging to the same workgroup. How do I do that in Windows Vista?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Frustrated/embarassed beyond belief (I work in a corporate IT department but
it's all W2K)

Click Start > right click 'Computer' on the Start menu > click 'Properties'
under 'Task' click 'Advanced system settings' > click 'Continue' on the
UAC dialog. Click the Computer Name tab on the System Properties window:

Click 'Change', under Member of: select the 'Workgroup' radio box > type in
your workgroup name > Click OK > OK

You will be prompted to restart, do so. Log back in > Click Start > Network
Network and Sharing Center > under Sharing and Discovery, make sure the
following are turned on:

- Network Discovery
- File Sharing
- Password protected Sharing

Got it! My new challenge is how do I find it...where is 'Microsoft Windows
Network' and how do I indicate that I want to grant access to files, folders
etc? Sorry to be a pest about this.

Click Start > type in Network and Sharing Center in the Search box. Click it
to open.

Once you are in the Networking and Sharing Center, look under 'Sharing and
Discovery'

Click the down arrow to the right off each of items I listed which I told
you to turn on, you will see the radio box select and Turn on that feature,
do this for all the others and you should be on your way.

And no, you are not a pest. :)

Thanks Andre....I hope my other computer will see it now.
