I'm stuck on a circular reference

A spreadsheet has two columns, month to date and year to date.

Is there some way without using another column, to be able to place a new
value in the MTD column and have it add it into the YTD column to give a
current YTD value?

June Before
MTD YTD
3 8

Change the 3 to 5 then:

June After
MTD YTD
5 13

There are many rows and many sheets to update; I'm looking for an easy way
to copy last month's workbook and just change the MTD figure and have it
update the YTD automatically without causing a circular reference.

You will not be able to do this without a circular reference or using
another column or table structure.

Are circular references allowed or is this an error message? Can it be done
with a circular reference?

It could by setting the iteration setting under Tools>Option>Calculation,
but it will not be sustainable as it will increment each time the worksheet
calculates. I would suggest using another column or table

That would means making all entries in the worksheet then calculating once -
sounds like a catastrophe waiting to happen. I guess I'll use the other
column method I have been using...

Thanks for the help,
Mich
