I'm still having amazingly slow boot times with vista... why!??

I've tried eliminating start up programs from Defender, I've tried system
restore. System restore works until I install any kind of software, even
just installing windows messenger causes it to revert back to a 15 min boot
from power up. Anyone have an idea why this is happening? Is it a MSCONFIG
setting? The speed of the computer is fine once booted, as it should be.
Its a intel core 2 duo 2.4 ghz, 1gb ddr2 800mhz ram, seagate 250 gb sata 2
hd. I would appreciate any help!

Control Panel|ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS|EVENT VIEWER may give clues.

Have you checked:
Control Panel
System and maintenance
Performance information and tools
Advanced tools (left pane)

at top there may be information on slow startup problems.

Thanks for everyone's input. I narrowed down the slow boot to a faulty
driver for my firewire port. Seems that I can't find one that works
properly. Its a via vt6308p 1394 expansion card, their website doesn't even
have a driver.. any ideas there? Windows says it has the most up to date one
loaded. ???
