I'm not sure where this should go... My computer was attacked and now I'm having problems with wind

I have windowsXPpro (bought from Dell several years ago and out of warranty)
2.52GHz, I.50 GB of Ram
88.2 GB of free space (most of my things -images, music, etc - are on an
external HD) and only the program files I run are on C drive.
Service pack 3
internet explorer 7
outlook express 6
Avast free antivirus

Last night I was attacked by a Trojan when I was downloading some supplies
for a tutorial from one of the share sites ( I can't remember whether it was
rapid share or 4share, but I don't think that really matters except to
explain how the attack occurred)... Avast's alarms went off and I
disconnected from the net. Then started running all my security
tools(Spybot Search and Destroy, XoftspySE, Ad-Aware, and Avast antivirus
all showed infection when I ran them)... I think that I finally got rid of
it, all those security tools show that the system is clean
but now I can't connect to windows update... I just get a blank page...
My automatic update is set to automatic in "my computer" and is bulleted,
but windows security center says it is turned off..

Please Help, I don't know what to do next or who to ask.

First and easiest thing would be to do a restore to an earlier date. DO NOT
do as 'The Real Truth' advises.

It seems I still have it, I cannot get on the internet because my security
settings keep getting changed. My cookies are set for only those from the
site but it keeps getting reset to 'all'.
I cannot do a system restore because I undid it while running my antivirus.
:-(
I hope there is someone here who can help, not just clown around.

Sandy, you have Avast and Spybot S & D on your computer, and they are up to
date.
Try and install, and update Malwarebytes listed below.
Then go into Safe Mode, and rescan from there.
All info below.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.
