I'm New & Shared Borders

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the group. I just upgraded to FP 2003 and have been trying to
learn how to do my own web pages. I don't have experience using html but
that's what I like about FP. It does it all for me. Anyway I have an online
small business that I started 4 yrs ago. I did my own website using FP 98
then last year I decided to hire someone to give my site a more professional
look but then I would take over maintaining it. My site was done using html
but then the designer changed everything over to asp. It was nice for awhile
but he had to do everything. I found it almost impossible to work with asp
in FP although I did try to learn how to do it. Running a business keeps me
busy so I just don't have time to learn to work using codes. My designer got
busy and my website took a back seat. I have many new items that I need to
get up so I can't wait for him any longer. I decided to do over my pages
myself but since I can't edit the asp pages I decided to start fresh
switching back to html. I like to keep the same theme running through my
pages so that when I make a change to one of the borders the changes will
show on all my pages, so I discovered shared borders, when my designer
heard about this, he told me not to use shared borders because it can't be
reversed. Can someone enlighten me on this? I mean once I have my website
finished, why would I want to reverse shared borders? Also is there any
reason why I would want to stick with asp seeing that I don't have any
experience with it? Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Gail,

First it depends on why your designer choose to you ASP to begin with, so
based on that you may actually create more work for yourself in the long
term, depending on how ASP was being used.

In FP you can work with ASP page the same way as you do html (htm) pages.

I would recommend that you look into using FP Include Page component,
instead of shared border, as they allow more flexibility for designing your
site. However since you have FP2003, look into using the Dynamic Web
Template which is a good replacement for shared borders, but not FP Include
Pages.

Gail,

I personally like shared borders. I have been using them
for a number of years without problem. My site is
relatively simple and the only regular changes I make to
my borders are for navigation.

As Thomas pointed out, Includes are a good way to go. I
have also heard some about the '03 dynamic templates, but
haven't played with them yet.

Unless you open a site in ,03 with a border on it, you may
need to turn the shared border aspect. To do this, you
would go to Tools >> Page Options >> Authoring and then
check Shared Borders.
