I only have basic Excel skills. I need to automatically insert one of three
predefined cell contents including unique background colors based on sampling
a calculation. The predefined cell contents are in cells AC-D4, the
calculation is in AB4 and the cell that needs to be changed is C4. The idea
is to flag financials and schedules either green, yellow or red based on the
presence and severity of a problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you need to look at Conditional Formatting in the Forma menu.

I have been trying to use the conditional formatting function but without
success thus far.

From your description it looks like you want C4 to change color based upon a
calculated value in AB4

Show us what you have tried and what your parameters are for problem severity.

BTW..............AC-D4 is not a range of cells.

AC is an entire column and D4 is a single cell.
