I'm connected correctly but after some time I can't navigate

HI,

this is a strange behaviour:

- I connect to my adsl line.
- I surf the web
- I connect through a P2P software (emule)
- After some time I can't navigate (emule doesn't work too)

The system is w2k SP4, Trust USB modem.

I don't think it's a modem issue, I do believe it's something about
windows.

I just installed the OS, the SP4 and refreshed the TCP/IP protocol.

What else can I do?

Thanks!!

What else can I do?

LOTS.

What does IPCONFIG /ALL says? All parameters there?

What does PING your_gateway_address do? Does it respond?

What does PING yahoo.com do? Does it respond?

OK, there are 2 cases.

1- when the modem is connected and I can browse

2- when the modem is connected BUT I can't browse

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In both cases, the result of ipconfig is this

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : the-cube
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Marvell Yukon
88E8001/8003/8010 PCI
Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-D8-9A-7B-EF

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking
Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-11-D8-9A-6D-E1

PPP adapter Trust MD3100 USB ADSL MODEM:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 151.38.70.122
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 151.38.70.122
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 193.70.152.15
193.70.152.25
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

---------------------------------------------------------------------

My gateway is my host address, since I don't have specified a default
gateway.
The ping of my gateway in both cases is this:

Pinging 151.38.70.122 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 151.38.70.122: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 151.38.70.122: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 151.38.70.122: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128
Reply from 151.38.70.122: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 151.38.70.122:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

---------------------------------------------------------------------

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE is when i ping yahoo.com

When I'm connected correctly, the ping is this:

Reply from 66.94.234.13: bytes=32 time=204ms TTL=49
Reply from 66.94.234.13: bytes=32 time=188ms TTL=49
Reply from 66.94.234.13: bytes=32 time=188ms TTL=49
Reply from 66.94.234.13: bytes=32 time=204ms TTL=49

and when i'm connected not correctly the ping is this:

PING yahoo.com
Unknown host yahoo.com.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going crazy!!

Any hint is appreciated!!

I am not familiar with USB ADSL settings, but these seem wrong.

IP address and Default Gateway, cannot be the same.

Subnet Mask 255x4 is illegal.

Since you are not using DHCP, u set these addresses yourself,
re-check.

OK, can you advice the right settings or give me some link to follow?

Thanks a lot!!

Another problem is that my ip address is dynamic, so I can't set the
default gateway and the subnet mask.....

:(

Well, from the ipconfig display, the other network adapters got NO
ADDRESSES, so I assume those aren't being used. The only network
adapter PPP got an address and it says DHCP DISABLED. When using
dynamic address, we would expect to see DHCP ENABLED.

Ah, can your ISP give you an ethernet modem instead? They should be
able to accomodate you without extra charge. USB modems are inflexible
and well, not a whole lot of people knows enough about them, like
right now when you need help.

Yes that is strange with the subnet mask, are you sure have anable DHCP ?
It's stupid to repeat it.
