Illegal Operation when viewing cells with comments

Excel has suddenly developed an aversion to showing cell comments. When placing the cursor overa cell with a comment, I get the message that "Excel has performed an illegal operation and will shut down." The same happens when I attempt to change the options to show all comments. This is what is shown behind the details button of the error window

Repairing Excel from the Office XP Pro install disk seems to do no good and McAfee scans reveal nothing untoward. I am reluctant to reinstall Office, fearing that I will again have to downoad the service pack upgrades. At 45300 baud on dial-up, the downloads take a long time

Thanks to anyone who can help

Reisinstall the video driver for your computer. Alternatively, turn off
video acceleration and see it that helps. If it does, it is most
probably video.
