IIS 7.0 not running on Vista Ultimate

John Olbert

After installing Vista Ultimate I tried to use the Internet Information
Services (IIS) Manager to manage the IIS7. I received the error message "Web
sites cannot be started unless both the Windows Activation Service (WAS) and
the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC) are running. Both services are
currently stopped."

At another point I received the error "The 'password' attribute is invalid".

I have tried to uninstall and re-install the "Internet Information Services"
a number of times but after a lenghty period this service will not un-install
or an error is thrown.

I have not been able to access the local web server on this Vista
installation even once since installation.

This problem was there from the initial installation of Vista Ultimate.

The installation was an upgrade of XpSp2.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

The upgrade over the top of XP is your problem. What you need to do if you
have a retail version of Vista is boot off the DVD, format the HD and
install Vista fresh.

Try uinstall bath WAS and IIS, reboot then reinstall.

the password attribute error should be related to the config file. if still
exist, remove the line in the config file.

I tried a number of times to remove Iis but after a long period of processing
Iis remains installed. Rebooting does not help.

Where would I locate WAS?

Thanks.

Please note that I am not complaining about the information you provided but
do you not think this situaion is extremely poor?

Most of the Vista installs will be from Xp so to let a bug like that get
though is absurd.

To have to scrap the entire installation and start fresh from a reformated
disk is not a reasonable solution.

Will Vista Sp1 fix this problem without a drastic reformat/re-install?

Thanks for your help.

If you have been working with MS products like the O/S(s), then you should
know that you don't do an upgrade. You would know to just completely avoid
any problems, period, on your end, and the route you should take is format
the HD and laydown the O/S fresh.

It may be your only solution. It is what it is.

Maybe and maybe not. I kind of doubt it, particular with something like IIS.
