Dear Microsoft,

I am an engineer and develop digital solutions. Have 42 years experience in
electronics and 17 in computers. I started using Microsoft OS from DOS 3.2
This is just to give my background.

I have purchased 5 Win 2k Prof packs. In last 6 months. 3 installed at
customer's site.
I have installed one on a system with SATA, which is used by my daughter.
This has been working and all updates applied.

To-day on Microsoft Site, I tried to download a software and was asked to
Validate.

Shocked to see a message that OS is not from Microsoft.

Contacted Microsoft Technical Support. After I explained the problem, and
gave all my details (Tel No., Microsoft Passport details, etc), As I use
ony Genuien OS I never thaought I will be in a situation that I am now.

My system got disconnected from Internet (DSL) after 30 minutes of the above
conversation. Re-installed the software, but Antivirus refused to update.
Before this I connected to Microsoft to check my IE. I checked connection to
ISP and all was fine. I called up Technical Support again and was told,
" If you want to connect to Internet you have to purchase XP or higher or
use 2K without connecting to Internet" My system is blocked from connecting
to Internet.

As a developer myself I respect IP and do not use Pireted software and
advice my friends and contacts to get Geuine OS.

On my personal system I have XP Prof. Office 2003 Prof. OneNote, CorelDraw
10, Lotus Suite, Ulead Vedio Stuio, Virtual CD7, Registry Mechanic,
Duplicate File Finder, Software development tools etc. All original and paid
for.

Will someone please explain what is happaning.
thanks for any advice and help.

It sounds like the pc is infected with msblast and or sasser. FYI;

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Dear Dave,

Thanks a lot,

You have made my day, yesterday I was in a very bad temper, and first thing
in the morning I see is your reply, I am happy.

I will re-install as per your instructions.

I am happy that Microsoft is supporting customers and allowing using of
trial software. Twice this has made me purchase and upgrade.
