IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error

I am running win XP Pro p4 with over 500MB ram norton ce
antivirus with latest updates and zone alarm firewall.
lately i have been getting frequent lock-ups. with
following dialog boxes:

iexplore.exe - application error
The instruction at "0x77f58738" referenced memory
at "0x00000038". The memory could not be "written".
click on OK to terminate the program.

at this point I have also lost all icons and taskbar
however desktop wallpaper remains, machine is very
slugish and somehow if I'm able to click OK to the above
prompt, another dialog comes up in about 30 sec or so as
follows:

iexplore.exe - application error
The instruction at "0x77f59163" referenced memory
at "0x0000002c". The memory could not be "read".
click on OK to terminate the program
click on CANCEL to debug the program

Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work
only way I have managed to shut down is by momentarily
pressing the power button and WinXP then starts shutting
down each running process individually.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP....

I know you said you have Norton, but it certainly sounds like you've got
a virus, perhaps something like Klez that immediately breaks antivirus
programs. Try scanning in Safe Mode either with NAV using updated
definitions (you can download them manually if you need to) or with a
standalone av program like Stinger. You can get Stinger here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Also, remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.security.kolla.de) and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com). Be sure to
update these programs before running, and run them in Safe Mode also.
After you've done these things, if the problem still persists, repost.
Be sure to include what you've already done to troubleshoot.

Cheers,

Malke
