Hello,

I know there is a group for IE but there is so little activity there
no one has responded to my posting.

Yesterday I installed IE8 and the install went fine except the program
won't open.

There is nothing of interest in the Event Viewer that seems to pertain
to the trouble.

I tried to re-install it and all it did was take out IE8 which left me
with a sort of crippled copy of IE7 <sigh>

Any thoughts as to what to do? Using XP Pro SP3 all updates.

Mercifully I made an Acronis image of the C and D drives before I made
the mistake of putting IE8 on the HD.

Thank you,

Accomac

Obviously, your fall-back option is to restore using Acronis - but, before
doing that, have you contemplated doing a System Restore to a time before
your IE8 install?

Can I assume you have rebooted after installing ver. 8? Is it possible
there is a phantom instance of it running invisibly (check Task
Manager), which might interfere with starting up a new instance? Is it
possible that it's running but it has been pushed off-screen (hit
Alt+Spacebar, then M to move it into view with the arrow keys.)

Uninstall, download and reinstall again.

This will uninstall IE8
%windir%\IE8\spuninst\spuninst.exe

Then you can go to Windows Update, download and reinstall again. Reboot and then try IE.

If you can open IE7, click Tools, select Manage Add-ons (or if you've
already restored using Acronis) then disable or uninstall all third
party toolbars...google, aol, yahoo, etc, before upgrading to IE8.

You can also try resetting IE defaults...click Tools, Internet Options,
Advanced tab, click Reset button.

Finally got IE 8 installed. I did what everyone suggested and also
turned off my Avast virus scanner. THIS time it went right in with no
trouble and it works even though I will rarely if ever use it.

Thanks to everyone!
