Hi, I;ve just had to reformat my drive and completely re-install xp which was
very painful as I lost everything, my own silly fault I know, so seing as I'm
starting afresh I wondered if there is any experienced opinionas to which is
better IE7 or Firefox, I've never used Firefox myself and when Ive questioned
the couple of people I know who do use it, they were very encouraging and
positive about it against using IE7. Thing is I dont want to make a mistake
and be back in this postion somewhere soon, so wondered if I could get some
solid opinions.

You must try each one to test yourself!

Forget IE7, I've seen nothing but reports of trouble.

Plus, at least you can take Firefox off without leaving your computer in
shards.

One of the main reasons I don't allow automatic updates is that they'd
surreptitiously acquire IE7 if they were allowed.

FF is infinitely easier to install than IE7. I installed IE7
successfully yesterday and here's what I did.

1 Disabled all anti malware programs such as Spywareblaster and Spybot.

2 Took the Anti Virus out of Start Up using MSCONFIG so it wouldn't load.

3. Cleaned up the computer, did a chkdsk and defrag.

4. Went to the direct download of IE7 and downloaded it.

5. Set a Restore Point with System Restore.

6. Installed IE 7 and rebooted. The first reboot did a chkdsk which
showed no bad sectors. Rebooted again, no chkdsk. Rebooted again and the
chkdsk ran again. Rebooted two more times and no chkdsk. Went and got
the update for IE7 from Windows Update. Rebooted again.

7. I finally opened IE7 and was disappointed because, frankly, Fire Fox
has better features and is easier to navigate.

The above said, I plan to put it on all my machines, not to use it but
for the security it supposedly adds to XP.

Even though you reformatted, some files may still be recoverable.
That's because the reformat just changes the first byte or two.
Download and install Restoration or another Undelete program. The more
you use the hd with the deleted files, the more data you overwrite.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

I use Firefox, but also occasionally use IE6. Since so much of Windows
GUI depends on IE, I'm not ready to depend on IE7 yet.

I would only recommend automatic updating to people who know very little
about computers.
If you mostly know what you're doing, go to the web site and select your own
updates.
Automatic updating does run nicely with a client-server network because the
server software can specify to the clients that certain updates are never to
be installed, so you can allow all those security patches but not IE7.

I haven't really tried Firefox..

Well, if you ever do, you'll realize why it's light years ahead of IE7.

FireFox will void your warranty, cause your cat to develop warts, and curdle
any milk in your fridge.

If your computer is out of warranty anyway, you don't have a cat, and are
lactose intolerant, you should be okay.

There is some evidence that Micros~1 secretly assisted in the development of
FireFox so those afflicted with Microsoft Derangement Syndrome will have
someplace to gather, leaving the rest of us with a computing experience
unsullied by screams and moans.

In general, the difference between a FireFox user and the third monkey on
Noah's gangplank is not great.

Install Firefox, use it for a while, and see what you think. It's very
easy to install, and if you want to get rid of it after a while, it's
easy to uninstall also. It's more standards-compliant than IE. It
handles favicons better (a small thing, but a nicety). Better password
management. Endless free plug-ins to customize it however you like. If
you're a web page developer you'll like the DOM inspector and the
Error Console, and there are plug-ins available to help out developers
beyond what these built-in things will do.

Try each and see what you like.

For IE7, see this link. Read the tips on installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/10/18/182724.aspx

Any issues on IE7 should be asked in the internet explorer newsgroup which
is where your original post could have gone.

Best depends on requirements. What's 'best' for you may be useless to me and vice versa. Having said that I
don't particularly care for the user interface of either of these browsers. I ultimately went with IE7 and Avant (a
shell for IE). This is a highly configurable user interface to the IE rendering engine with enhanced security and
features that would require Firefox with numerous extensions to get the same functionallity. Avant can be
found at http://www.avantbrowser.com/

I'd never delete IE - seems like a no-cost option to keep it as long as it isn't
used and a significant risk in removing it.

I tried FireFox briefly because some many people recommended it.

Problem I had was with FireFox's management of Favorites.

Instead of keeping objects in a directory like IE does, FireFox maintains an XML
file - with the net result that the Favorites become proprietary to FireFox.

That didn't work for me. I want my Favorites in a regular Windows directory
where I can slice and dice them as I want - and copy them here and there as
needed - like onto the system tray or my desktop....

Tangentially, I recently installed IE7 and have come to like it's Tab feature a
*lot*.... which I think used tb one of FireFox's distinguishing features.

I use and like both depending on what I want to do. IE is my default browser,
but I use FF for surfing the Web since its management functions are much better
than those of IE.

The basic FF GUI appearance isn't all that great IMHO, so I use one of many
available skins (SkyPilot currently, which has been around for many versions of
Mozilla as well as FF).

Try FF. As others have pointed out, it installs easily and uninstalls just as
easily if you decide it's not for you.

I do agree that it is convenient to have the Favorites stored within a
folder, but it is extremely easy to manipulate ("slice and dice", copy, etc)
them within Firefox. And if you need a little more control you can always
use FF's Bookmarks Manager.
Instead of keeping objects in a directory like IE does, FireFox maintains an XML
file - with the net result that the Favorites become proprietary to
FireFox.

There is nothing proprietary to how FF stores Favorites/Bookmarks. They are
stored in a straight forward HTML file that can easily be imported into IE
(and other browsers as well I'm sure).

Hi Georgi,

As others have mentioned you are free to try both. I would definitely
recommend Firefox though! Firefox has a very clean install and uninstall so
if for whatever reason you are unhappy with it, it is very easy to take off
of your system. Firefox is also much more secure. This comment will no
doubt start a flame war but it's true. It's true for many reasons but it's
core strength right now is that it is a smaller target than IE, that is, IE
is still the dominant browser on the Internet therefore a bigger target for
hackers, spyware, virus, etc.

I understand the IE7 is fairly stable at the moment but I would personally
wait a while and let MS iron out all of the bugs/kinks.

I imported FF favorites into IE7 yesterday. Done in a flash.

Hello,
Concerning a browser, if it is a home unit why not install several browsers.
Make one the default and use the others when you please.
On my home unit I have IE7, Firefox, Opera and OffbyOne.
I find that downloading each browser, saving and then installing while off
line with AV, pop-up stoppers and spy-ware detection disabled to be without
problem.
I save all downloads in case a problem occurs later and I need to reinstall
the program.
I use IE7 as the default, a good browser.
I use Firefox as first backup and on a daily basis about 35% of the on-line
time.
Opera and OffbyOne for emergency and learning purposes.
They all have enough of a difference and some interesting abilities.
They all have different add-ons.
take care.

For what purpose? Earlier you said:

If you're not going to use IE7 why would you import faorites?

Some sites that I visit require IE7 of course! I also did it to test it
on various sites that use flash and Java. And, I did it to see if the
import would work.
