IE7 home page hijacked

I have a friend running WindowsXP. She has IE7 installed. She has a DSL
provider that had the home page set to their site. I can not remove it. I
remove it from the list, click apply, then OK and leave. When I go back
it's there again. I've seen something similar on another machine.

How does one get rid of this home page entry? I have removed all the
programs related to this ISP but the home page still exists.

I was going to uninstall IE7 and reinstall it, but a box popped up listing
all the programs that were installed since IE7 was installed. Would
removing and re-installing affect these apps, or would they deal with it in
the new install of IE7? Or if I was to install IE7 over itself ( if this
is possible) would this help?

Some things to try:

1. If the feature is disabled (greyed out), go to MVP Doug Knox's site
and download this script:
http://www.dougknox.com/security/scripts_desc/nosethomepage.htm

Usage: Download nosethomepage.vbs and save this file to your hard drive.
Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file. The VB Script
file will check for the appropriate value and if not found will create
it. You will be notified whether the option is enabled or disabled.

1a. If the script doesn't help, Start>Run>regedit [enter]

Navigate to these keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "Start Page"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
- DWORD "NoSetHomePage"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions] - DWORD "NoSetHomePage"=dword:00000001

Change the values to 00 00 00 00.

2. Check to see if third-party security software is not allowing the
homepage change. Examples are Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, some
anitivirus/security suites.

You will probably find the details of the OEM in the registry which retains
OEM home page and other variables like Internet Explorer provided by .....

Without editing the registry, if you download a new copy of IE7 from MS and
then install, it resets the parameters of IE7 without all the OEM info

Installing IE7 over IE7 sounds like the easiest fix. When I was going to
uninstall first I noticed it warns me about all the programs that were
installed AFTER IE7. If I uninstall it will this be a issue, or will these
program just go with the flow and hook themselves back to IE7?

Thanks, I will try what you suggested. I also learn there could be a
spyware program (coolwebsearch) that could be a problem too and I will test
for that when I get my hands on that laptop.
