I have been running a valid version of windows XP (registered and validated
with Microsoft, even by phoning to activate)

I have been able to download updates etc from Windows update site (and still
can)

But since updating to IE7 I now get a message saying my windows XP is not
genuine.

I am also running Ofiice 2000 professional, also validated previously with
microsoft.

Has anyone seen this before.

Should I go back to IE6, and then use Firefox instead??

Actually I would use Firefox all the time in preference to IE, not only is
it much more stable but it is also a much safer browser in respect to viruses
etc. and it has many downloads to further it's usefulness ie. Fasterfox.
Using IE both 6 & 7 I was constantly getting 8 - 10 critical objects a day
when running Ad-Aware now I consider I am getting more than usual if I get
one a week.

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure, courtesy of MS MVP
Carey Frisch:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and
then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA
Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data
in a detailed post:

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

Don't use Firefox. It will void your warranty and your cat will develop
warts.

Some say Firefox was developed sub rosa by Micros~1 to drain away those
afflicted with "Microsoft Derangement Syndrome" from the otherwise
harmonious family of computer users.

They can then get in their own little group and give each other high-fives
while wearing their fake Batik print garmets pilling at the elbows, and
earth-shoes. The rest of us, meanwhile, can have an enjoyable computing
experience without all the constant bitching and moaning.

It's kinda like getting your wife a new washing machine.
