IE6 Lingering effect of Sasser virus?

I'm running XP Home and got the Sasser virus and was not
able to access the Symantec website or any other anti-
virus website. I downloaded the Symantic tool on another
computer and removed the virus. I was still not able to
access anti-virus software websites to update my Norton
software and now I can't even launch IE. When I shut
down XP I get multiple error messages saying "Verizon
Alert Not Responding" (Verizon is my DSL
provider), "Internet Explorer Not Responding"
and "iExplorer Not Responding". Any ideas?

It's not documented but does this virus create a HOSTS file to block these
sites?

Look for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.
