IE6 informs to install newer MS Virtual Machine

what should I do here?

using Win2000 Pro with the latest SP4 applied, IE6 6.0.2800.1106

some webpages on my company (IE Trusted site) site have java applets
and when I pop IE on the page, a message box pops up to let me know I
need a newer version of MS Java Virtual Machine

it automatically takes me to

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/getosver/javaxp.asp

"..We're sorry. The page you are viewing requires that you have a more
recent version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine on your system. To
obtain an updated version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine, please go
to Windows Update.."

I click on the link to Windows Update and it takes me to

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

On this page there is only a Windows Catalog to download all sorts of
updates and I already did download and install the over 5mb VM update

Doing a Scan for Updates shows that I have all the latest items
installed and there are no new recommendations.

I have enabled all java settings and the irony is that using another
box with XP Pro installed, the internal webpage with java displays
fine

Go to the command line and type "jview". What version do you have? Mine is
Version 5.00.3810.

Microsoft and Sun battled over who can distribute the JVM (java virtual
machine); see http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/. Don't remember all
the fallout but do recall that certain configurations of Windows and IE
result in no JVM (from Microsoft). I think the Windows Update will also
not list a JVM update if you have whatever configurations restrict
Microsoft from distributing their JVM. Do a Google search on "microsoft
java virtual machine download" and you'll find some links of where you
can still download the Microsoft JVM.

Or go to http://www.java.com/ and get Sun's JVM. You will need to check
Advanced options in IE to check that the Sun JVM is enabled. Once it is
installed, you can run "java -version" in a DOS shell to see which
version of Sun's JVM that you have. When you visit a Java-enabled web
site, like http://www.nascar.com/multimedia/trackpass/about.html, an
icon appears in the system tray for Sun's JVM. The only defect in
behavior is that this tray icon does not disappear when you navigate
away from the page that used Java (to one that doesn't or when you close
the browser). Use the Java Plug-in applet in Control Panel to configure
Sun's Java plug-in. I just looked there and apparently Sun doesn't
enable the plug-in to support Netscape by default.
