IE6 Hangs

I have 4 computers on my home network, 1 running Win XP Home SP2, 1 running
Win XP Pro SP2, and two running Win XP Entertainment Center, and all
protected with MS firewall and Norton or McAfee antivirus, that started
hanging. The remaining 5 computers run OK. There is no problem connecting
to other computers on the network, and on two of the computers there is
access to other internet sites other than MS. I cannot download updates to
Windows of McAfee but I can download updates to Norton AV 2005. On some of
the computers IE says website found, but never loads it, and others partially
load MSN.com but won't complete the task and then hang.
I have installed Netscape to see if IE 6 was flawed but it did the same thing.
Other computers on the network are configured the same and do not have the
problem.
Any advice?

I am having the same problems. I will continue to research the problem and
will keep you posted if I find anything helpful.

I am having the same problem. I usually get "page not found" after it sits
for a while trying to download the webpage. All other network connections
are fine, and is it just the communications in IE and Outlook stops as well
(server not found errors). Can you drop to a command window and ping
yahoo.com successfully. I find that I can, and that the problem is just
within IE and outlook.

Yes, I can ping Yahoo, Dell, and some others. I don't get responses from
MSN, Microsoft, HP, and McAfee. Of course those are the ones I want. Seems
like something is blocking contact with some internet sites but not all. Is
this the firewall that is doing this? How did it decide to select the sites
I use most often?
I have also opened windows in the safe mode and disabled the add-ons I don't
recognize. Didn't help. Should I try to shut them all down?

I have tried all that they have set, resetting the winsock, running all the
malware programs and posted the HiJackThis log (which was clean). Still
have this intermittant problem. What version of Java are you running? I
have read some things on the last update and I think that I might try
uninstalling it to see if that is the problem....

I have it set to download the latest updates but I don't know the update
number off the top of my head. I'll send it later.
I have also tried disabling the firewall (no change) and resetting the
system to a date prior to my problem. All to no avail.
I also run java on most of my other computers with no ill effect.

Hi,

What version of Java are you running? I removed the latest Java (5_6) and I
have not had the problem in a couple of days. I had read that there were
some problems with it. I am still monitoring it to see if it occurs, and
will let you know.

Sorry, I left town for a few days (nothing illicit).
I am running 1.3.0_4 on one unit, 1.4.0_6 on another, and 1.5.0_6 on two
other units, all with the same problem, the hang up of IE6 when accessing
certain websites. Other website work fine.
I also have other units on the same network using each of those versions of
JRT and have no problem.

Hi Steve,
No. I'm still struggling with it. I have run traces to try to find out
where it is hanging up without much luck. I can always raise my gateway but
specific sites (MSN.com, Microsoft.com, McAfee.com) time out when I ping them
on some computers and others have those sites and others that won't respond
when pinged.
This whole episode i think began when I changed out my cable modem to see if
the new one worked and then changed back to the old one (I want to have a
spare if one konks out).
I also run VPNs occasionally from computers other than the ones that won't
connect but I don't leave those VPNs on but when I'm using them.
What happens is I open IE and it responds web site found, waiting for reply
and then hangs.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks.

Hi H.Adams,

I have experienced similar behavaviour from a fresh install of IE SP2, (
many websites were accessible, some just start to build and then hang with
nothing displayed e.g. otn.oracle.com ) the solution in my case was to define
a local proxy server ...
The problem has been solved ...
Browser -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings -> Use a
proxy server for your lan ( enter host and port address of proxy server )
and otn.oracle.com can be displayed

Hi Steve,
That is most helpful, but I may need a little help here.
How do I determine the address and port number for the proxy server?
If the proxy server is my gateway using ICS then I know that address but I
don't know which port it uses. Is there some command I can use to find out?
I tried "ping" but that didn't give me a port number.
Thanks,

Hi Steve,
It didn't like that at all. First thing it did was give me an error message:
The instruction at "0x77279295" referenced memory at "0x7d4b2e20". The
memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.
When I opened IE again, it immediately said it could not find website.
When I went back to automatically detect LAN settings it worked like it did
before: with MSN it says found website: waiting for reply == but there is not
reply.
If I go to Dell.com for example it partially loads the site. However, I can
go to Sun's Java site without any difficulty.
Any other ideas?
