IE6 hangs on loading ABCNEWS.COM ESPN.COM HSN.COM DISNEY.COM

There was some topics regarding this a few months back but there were
never any real solutions. Has anyone figured out how to fix this?

Certain web pages, (named above) refuse to load on IE6. It only
happens on my Dell 8100 desktop. My laptop (same OS) loads those pages
with no problems. I have even gone as far as a full reinstall of
Windows XP pro and it still won't work. My desktop and laptop have the
same applications loaded. I turned off all add popup blockers and
disabled my anti-virus software, (which I run on the laptop) but these
pages still won't load
Does anyone have ideas?

I'm having the same problem. Some more sites that don't load:
- www.marriott.com
- www.orbitz.com

For a while I thought it was a problem with JavaScript (all these sites use
it), and so I applied the patches that MS lists in their Knowledgebase
(q824145 and q827667), but that hasn't helped either. Now I'm beginning to
wonder if it's something to do with style sheets, since many of these sites
use them.

Other things I've tried, all to no avail:
- reloading the operating system (XP Pro) to get back to pre-SP1 IE6
- re-installing the script engine
- loading these sites into the "Trusted" zone and removing all security for
that zone
- looking for spyware (none)
- installing a 3rd party java rendering engine (just in case)

The only solution I've found is to use a different browser - Opera, Mozilla
and NEtscape all work fine.

Any other ideas welcomed.

I am not sure why, but the Orbitz site is a problem for a lot of people.
Most likely because it downloads so much "stuff" (ie alot of GIF's and ad's)
I have the same version of IE as you and it works fine for me, sometimes its
very slow. I think you have to have active X on, does not seem to matter
about cookies. A few people have said that clearing old cookies and temp
files fix's the problem.

Thanks Tedd

I checked and my Active X is on. I have a cable connection so its not
something related to speed. I originally cleared my temporary and
cookies file, but that didn't work. I even reinstalled the whole XP
operating system and still nothing.

Try using your Security settings and if you like also your Privacy settings
to detect how far you are getting into those sites. E.g. set as many
options to Prompt as you can and then reply Yes to each prompt.
Describe your results in terms of the prompts you get for each site.
Also tell us when errors are first apparent and what they are.

Robert,

That's a great troubleshootiung tip, thanks.

Orbitz.com, ABCnews.com and ESPN.com all stop after the first prompt, which
asks about scripts.
HSN.com stops after two prompts about scripts.
my.yahoo.com puts up a prompt about scripts, then loads fully.

If I look in the source files, it appears that the commands are stopping the
pages all include something like this:
<script language="Javascript"
src="http://espn.go.com/insertfiles/javascript/flash.js"
type="text/javascript"></script>

That is, it's the redirection to the *.js files that appears to be killing
the window. Some of the redirection is to an absolute location (as above),
and some are to a relative location.

Bear in mind that my coding skills are 20 years out of date, so I could be
wrong here.

Any further ideas?

Thanks again.

Mike,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried them all, but I still can't see the sites.

And yes, I can see the lite version of ESPN just fine.

Any other ideas?

And by the way, I spent an hour or so on the Microsoft Chat line, to no
avail. The best the support agent could come up with is a bad Hosts file,
but I only have one, and it's fine. (And I can see those sites fine with
other browsers, which would indicate my network config is just fine).

I'd happily give up and use Netscape or Opera, but some of the sites I use
for work require IE. So for now I'm stuck using different browsers for
different web sites.

Sigh.

Some additional information:

Tried to check out at the online store at www.cinefex.com With IE, when I
fill out their form and click submit, the site does not recognize my
entries, and reports a "no data" error. I was able to check out just fine
with Netscape.

The form's URL is https://www.cinefex.com/cart/checkout.php?out=1.

Did you try denying use of Scripting instead? (Reply No.)
When I do that a second prompt immediately comes up
but instead of answering it right away I let the rest of the page load
in the background. When the loading settles down see what happens
if you reply Yes to the second prompt.

From previous experience I know that those other two are even more
complicated than that one. Let's concentrate on figuring out why the
simple sites aren't working first and then if necessary deal with the others.

BTW we don't know what your maintenance level is.
Please execute the following script fragment in your Address bar
and post the result.

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Hmm... I just tried to do that on top of the Orbitz page but it didn't work.
Instead I had to first load About:Blank and then try it. Since I still had
all my security settings at Prompt I then got the prompt for this too.

HSN.com stops after two prompts about scripts.

What I saw there was: a redirect to www.hsn.com then the prompt about
Scripts; allowing that got me a brownish background and a prompt about
ActiveX controls and plug-ins; allowing that got me most of the page
then shortly after a prompt for Cookie; meanwhile things continued loading
in the background until finally the Status bar showed:
<example>
(1 item remaining) Downloading data http://a644.g.akamai.net/f/644/67...
</example>
(Unfortunately my screen was normal size otherwise I probably could have
seen more of that path and filename.)
I allowed that Cookie and then got another prompt -- ActiveX control...
safe for scripting. Another Cookie (7 times!) Done. (No? Not yet...)
Do you want to allow scripts to access Java applets? One more Cookie.
Something else flashed by in the Status bar about Java applets
and finally(!) it was done.
my.yahoo.com puts up a prompt about scripts, then loads fully.

So there's no problem with it after all?

On Orbitz, if I deny the first script prompt, I immediately get another.

That is global.js that you are skipping.
The first two lines in there are:

<extract>
self.onerror = function() {return true;}

var agt=navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();

</extract>

So let's run that second line in the Address bar.
javascript:navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase()
What do you get with that? (I usually run just the property name
but in case the function has something to do with your problem
let's include it too.)

Following that is some convoluted code which attempts to classify
the browser version and platform. I won't extract it here.
But my guess is that there will be something unusual about your
User Agent string which is causing this code to either pick the wrong
browser or platform or simply go off the rails and return nothing
(i.e., execute the first line of the two I extracted).

If you want you could install the Script Debugger and check that
out for yourself. If you just want to identify which script file is involved
a simpler diagnostic procedure is to use FileMon (freeware from
SysInternals) to monitor for *.js accesses.

For related problems I often suggest that users visit

< http://www.gemal.dk/browserspy/basic.html >

That may be easier for you.

Whether I deny or accept the second one doesn't seem to matter - either way,
the page loads, and everything seems to work except for the calendar options
in the middle of the left column. No calendar pop-ups, and the option for
"flexible dates" doesn't work. Which I guess indicates there's a problem in
the script for that component. Unfortunately my coding skills are too weak
to be able to figure out the exact command in the source that's causing the
hang up.

Dates are being processed by the same global.js file.
There is a mixture of variable initialization and function declaration
in there; so I'm not too sure what all is done when.
Again, running a Script Debugger would probably clarify this.

I was hoping that I could spot some common factor from your other
examples but wasn't able to. Let's just concentrate on making
this one work properly first.

Good luck

I think that what he has is Ok. All those other ones are just
the previous IE cumulative patches which would have been
superseded by the latest one, Q832894.

Q330994 is the cumulative patch for OE6sp1

BTW I'm impressed by AU. I didn't think that was that smart.

I'm hopeful we'll see some results from the User Agent angle.
