IE6 Favorite links navigate first open IE window

Strange and annoying.

I have the Links toolbar active and I have subfolders in
the links favorite folder. Selecting a URL from one of
these subfolders causes the first instance of IE opened to
navigate to the selected sight not the one from which the
URL was selected.

Normally, this is only minor annoyance except for when it
clears webforms with entries not restored by the BACK
function, which is a huge annoyance!

It also means, to do what I want to and not lose my
original page, I have to manually enter the URL in the new
window.

Is this a setting or a bug(feature) of IE6?

Erik,
Still watching for replies? Sorry for the delay.
Some possible solutions came to mind. First, it might be as easy as Internet
Options> Advanced> uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts.

Next, see http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_10.htm#launch Changing
those values to "yes" might get the desired result.

Or, you can modify each shortcut to open a new instance of IE using this
method:
Find "IExplore.exe"
Right-click and drag IExplore.exe to the desktop and choose "Create
shortcut." Right-click that shortcut> Properties> Target, modify the Target
to include the URL.
Example:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"
becomes
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" www.yahoo.com
Note a space between " and w
Then move that shortcut to the folder of your choice.

Hope this helps,
Don

Thanks for the reply Don.

Unfortunately, none of those really solved my problem.
Un-checking the option in the Internet Options>
Advanced> "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts." does
allow me to select the items from the subfolders on my
Links toolbar directly from the original window. Doing
this, indeed, launches the URL in a new window. However,
if I select a link not in a subfolder on the links toolbar
but directly on the links toolbar, it still uses the
original window. Also, regardless that I have the reuse
box unchecked, clicking the shortcut from the Favorites
menu instead of the Links toolbar opens the URL in the
current window. This doesn’t bother me so much since I
never use the favorites menu and always use the links
toolbar.

Though, the third method does indeed force the link to
open in a new instance of IE, there are times (most times)
that you don't necessarily want new windows springing up
all over. I would expect that clicking a link on a
toolbar within a particular instance of IE would open the
link in that window. I recognize that the reuse option is
an attempt to address this and it is a good option to
have.

I like to be in control of when I get a new window, thus
it would be better if the context menu for the shortcuts
had an “Open in New Window” option as does the context
menu of a link on a web page.

The inconsistencies between the behaviors of
links/shortcuts in different locations or the same ones
accessed in different ways are very strange!

I probably should have mentioned before that I am running
Windows Me and IE6.0.2800.1106. I don't know if that
changes anything. My wife’s system doesn’t seem to have
this problem; she is running Win98SE and IE6.0.2800.1106.
My friend’s system running WinXP and
IE6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 also does not exhibit
this problem.

While trying all your suggestions, I think I have come up
with a work around. When I am on a page filling in info
and I need to check something, I open a new window with ^N
instead of launching a new instance of IE from the Quick
Launch toolbar. This creates an exact duplicate, as far
as I can tell, of the current window. Then I use my links
toolbar to navigate where I want to go, which of course
switches the original window. But, the new window is
still the first window I had. Who’s on first, what’s on
second and I don’t know is on third… :P It’s crude, but
seems to be effective without knowing why it has the
problem in the first place.

I’m still open to suggestions that might actually solve
the problem though, any more ideas?

Thank you so much for the help and I apologize for being
so wordy.

I'm running the same version of IE that you are (also with WinME) My links
bar works the way you want yours to work. ;-)
From http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_10.htm#launch
Are these registry keys set to yes?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/explorer/Browse
NewProcess
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/explorer/BrowseN
ewProcess

The Back button may take you back to forms you've filled in without losing
data if you change this setting:
Internet Options> Advanced> Security, uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages
to disk."

But, like you, I use Ctrl+n frequently.

Did you know that you can drag a link down to an IE button on the taskbar,
hold it there a second until that window restores, then drag the link up to
that window? I often keep a blank window or two minimized for that purpose.

If you solve the Links bar mystery, let me know.

Hi Don.

My Registry does have those keys set to yes.
Your dragging link from toolbar to taskbar works for me so
I think that and ctrl-n are the way I'll go until I get a
revalation as to why my installation is SPECIAL.

I'll let you know when/if I figure it out.
Thanks for the help.
