IE6 crashes when prompted to play WM stream

Hi!

When I click on a link that launches a WM stream (e.g
http://www.sen.com.au/pages/listen.html) in IE my browser completely
crashes.

I used to get this error message before I updated windows with the new error
reporting update. Now it just shuts down - no message that the program has
terminated - no opportunity to send a report. Just a straight close.

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: wininet.dll ModVer:
6.0.2800.1405 Offset: 00063308

I suspect this has occured because of a couple of reasons:

Ever since I download a Security update a few week ago - everytime I
launched a WM based embedded audio/video stream I was prompted by a dialog
window that said that a request was made by the program to launch another
program (or something to that effect) Did I wish to proceed - YES/No and
tickbox that said 'Do not show this message in the furture'. I always
clicked yes and always ticked the box - and it would always keep coming up
(silly IE). I fear I may have inadvertantly clicked no and thus stopped all
ever 'calls' in IE to lauch and WM app - so thus it isn't a real crash as
such rather a security thing.

I have run the IE repair thing sfc/ scannow and that didn't help anything.
It works fine in Mozillla so its not a modem.isp thing.

IE/WMP work fine otherwise.

I am using IE 6.0 and WMP 9.0 all the lastest version that I am aware of.

Anyone help me?

Try diagnosing this further. Clicking on the Listen button would be
equivalent to going here:

Instead of going there directly, set your Security options to prompt you
for at least Active Scripting, ActiveX controls and plugins, and
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.
Confirm that you can do that by replying No and No.
Then test with Yes and No. For extra safety you could set Work Offline
and then re-render the page by loading About:Blank on top of it;
then go back and test another combination of prompts.

FWIW when I do that and reply to all prompts with all Yes (while offline)
I get Error on Page. Doubleclicking on that shows:
Line: 76
Char: 25
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method
Code: 0
URL:http://www.bigblue.net.au/business/sen_1116/index.php?nomenu=yes

There seems to be a coding error on that page

<param name="AllowScan" value="flase">

(It undoubtedly should be "false".)

but I don't think that that should be the cause of a crash.

So how did you get this crash signature?
Have you disabled the Error Reporting Tool?

In case it really is something to do with wininet.dll
you could try this command:

regsvr32 /i /n wininet.dll

(Wininet.dll has an entrypoint for DllInstall but not for DllRegisterServer.)

Good luck

Linda

Hi,
I have the same problem. When I open up the mls listing
to do a search I choose what I want from my options and
when I click search it closes unexpectedly. This is also
happening to my friend. Only it happens on something
different in his browser. There is no error messages or
anything it just shuts down. I'm still connected to the
internet but the browser shuts down. I am also on 6.0.28

Thanks
Linda
