IE won't run after Installing XP SP2

While fixing a friends PC (inundated with Malware), I came to the final step
of installing XP SP2. I had spent several days cleaning the PC with the
following tools: 1) AVG Ver 7, 2) Spybot S & D, 3) ZoneAlarm.

Everything was working well UNTIL I downloaded and installed SP2. Upon
reboot, IE refuses to run. I still have internet access (using Cable Modem)
as I receive AV updates, etc. but the Internet browser simply won't run. I
even created a Word Doc, saved as html, and IE would not run to open it.

You need to use more than on spyware remover, such as adaware, SP2
specifically says to make sure all spyware is removed in its documents.
Can you get another browser to work such as firefox?
Try uninstalling sp2 and see if ie works first, then use another spyware
removal program.

I had considered installing FireFox, but was waiting until AFTER the SP2
installation.

I ran Spybot S & D ( current version -- current update) MULTIPLE times
prior to the SP2 installation...

Thanks for the suggestion....I'll obtain a 2nd Spyware removal tool, and try
the uninstall prior to formatting the drive and starting from scratch.

I've got the same problem. I'm running WinXP Home SP2 and IE refuses to
work. I double click the desktop icon and absolutely nothing happens. FireFox
and Yahoo browsers both work fine. I've got Norton Systemworks on this system
and its clean with no viruses or malware. So how did I get to this point? Let
me backup a bit.

I first noticed I had problems when I installed Iomega's Automatic Backup
Pro 3.3 software. When I tried to run a full image backup on my system I got
and "Invalid Function" error. I immediately assumed it was a problem with ABP
and not WinXP. So I uninstalled the software and later installed Ghost 10.0.
When I tried to do a full image backup with Ghost I again got the "Invalid
Function" error again.

So I reinstalled WinXP from the old OEM disk and reapplied SP2. But now IE
won't start and consequently I've lost access to Windows Updates too.
Everything else on the system seems to work fine. Although I haven't gone
back and tried to do another backup yet with Ghost. But I suspect that
problem remains too. I've tried booting from the WinXP CD and using the
Repair option twice now but nothings changed. Everything else is great, IE is
dead.

What a pain. By now I suppose I probably could have reformated the drive and
reinstalled everything with the time I've wasted so far. And by the way, I
did run disk repairs before I did all the rest mentioned above, so I don't
believe it's a disk problem. Sorry i don't have the doc with me where I
recorded the address of the "Invalid Function". If I find it I'll try to
update this post with it.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing it? Or why a reinstall of WinXP
doesn't fix the problem? Mmm, come to think of it. Long ago when i
upgraded/replaced the C: drive on this machine I used an old version of
Ghost to do it (launched from a floppy with a special software switch that
cleared the Drive ID so that WinXP would work on the new drive.) I just now
remembered this. Could this be related to the problem? I'd always assumed
WinXP just created a new Disk ID, and I think I remember running the
Activation again with no further problems.
