IE wont go to URL from typed in link.

My IE recently began exhibiting problems with not being able to go to a URL
that was typed in, but would go to any link that could be clicked on. When
loaded my IE will display whatever is set to be the home page, but when I
type in a URL it will take it nearly 10 minutes to finally display the page,
but if I click on any link in my home page it will respond within seconds.
Also if I use a link from history in the combo box it will work correctly.
Any suggestions? I have been getting around this by having a search engine
in my history box, going to that page and then typing in what I want to go to
from there. What a pain.
