IE won't display graphics on some sites

T

Tim Arnold

IE 6.0, Windows XP home
Internet connectivity is through a router with NAT.
PC is running ZoneAlarm.

I don't remember changing anything, but ...

All of a sudden, both IE and Outlook (2002) won't display graphics for some
sites. For example, I can't access any of the images on amazon.co.uk (or
amazon.com). All I get is the red X.

If I type the URL of the graphic straight into the address bar, I get a
"Cannot find server or DNS error@. Yet if I do the same from my wife's
laptop (connected to the same router, by the way), she gets the image just
fine.

Similarly, a ping to the server fails as unable to resolve the host name.

Other sites work perfectly.

I've cleared the cache to no avail. DOes anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Tim

Look at the encoding in your internet explorer. Go to
View, Encoding and try setting it to Unicode(UTF-8).

I have the same problem. It started 2 days ago, but nothing has been
installed recently that I know of; nothing has changed. I have tried
all the suggestions documented or linked to this thread. No help.

I do see a message down in the status bar that says it is downloading
picture http://groups.google.com/images/groups_beta_sm.gif. If I
paste that into my browser, I just get the red x.

Other ideas?

Did you work through Henri's page at
http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/ieimage.htm ?

If the problem usually involves small GIFs, this may help

I've fixed the red-x-problem on my pc. Getright (4.5) caused the problem!
This is how to do it: un-install getright.
Delete these two registry keys (the un-install does not do that!)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\ftp]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Name-Space Handler\http]
