IE won't connect without typing http://

I'm haveing a weird problem that just started a couple of weeks ago. IE will
not connect to a webpage unless I type the full address including the
http:// If I just type www.cnn.com (for example) in either the address bar
or open location dialog box, IE hangs and I have to kill it through the task
manager. What gives? I've scanned my computer for spyware and viruses, it
came up clean.

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
