IE Slow to connect on computer startup

R

Ron Lamb

I have noticed a problem lately where I.E. is slow to load a web site when
the computer first starts up. It just sits and spins on a blank page.
Usally it takes about 30 seconds before it can connect. Once this happens
all other connections work.

I can run Firefox immediately on bootup and get right into the sight.

The computer is only a few month old, and I don't remember it happening at
first until recently. I haven't installed anything new in the last month,
except for XP updates and Norton updates.

This makes me think it is some security update that is causing this.

Has anyone else known this to happen.

In addition to Robear's suggestions, you could also totally clear your TIF
and History files. If they are too large, or their respective hidden
index.dat file are too large or damaged/corrupted, it can take IE a long
time to start as it reads through those files when first starting:

Thanks, I'll try that, but I checked and the cache was only set to 218 MB,
and my old computer has it at 450 MB without any delay.

I already checked for adware, and didn't find any, I doubt any would show
up since I believe Norton checks for it. I will still look at the
Hijackware that Robear mentioned.

I'll post here tomorrow when I reboot if it fixed this.

Well I tried the cache settings and it seemed to complete fast, so I doubt
there was much in there. I tend to clear the cache a lot anyway. I'll
check about corruption next.

It's not so much the total size of the cache as it is the index.dat file
within the folder that doesn't really get cleared when emptying the TIF via
IE. You'll have to totally delete the TIF and History folders to get those
index.dat files - per the link I previously posted. Or CCleaner does a good
job:

As for malware/spyware, I wouldn't totally rely on NAV/NIS to catch all of
it. You'll need to follow Robear's suggestions to make sure your system is
totally clean.

Well it was the corrupt index.dat file. I deleted it and now it loads
fast again.

This definitely sounds like a bug that Microsoft needs to fix.
