Hi,

I am working on a computer that had some malware. The malware seems
to be gone, but at least one problem persists: When an executable
file is downloaded using the RUN option from the download dialog box,
the file automatically runs when the download is finished. For some
reason IE does not prompt me to run the file like it should.

Any ideas for a fix? Thanks in advance.

Bill

Bill, I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but go to
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom level. There is a
option to check for being prompted for downloads.

Rich,

Thanks for your reply, but that did not help.

Use the Save option.
The security warning will prompt telling you:
The publisher could not verified. Are you sure you want to run this softwware?
Name: XXXX.exe
Publisher: Unknown Publisher

Run Don't Run buttons

This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its
publisher. You should only run softwares from publishers you trust.

Rey,

I tried the save option...then run after file was downloaded, but I
never got the security message. How can I turn that security message
back on?

Bill

Try this:
When the Security Warning pops up click on the button "More options" (two
arrow heads pointing down). On the next prompt tick "Ask me everytime".

Rey,

There is no "more options" button.

Rey,

I tried another XP machine to see what the behavior is supposed to
be. After a file is downloaded using either the SAVE or RUN option, a
security warning box is supposed to come up with message "Do you want
to run this file?" or "Do you want to run this software?"

That warning box never appears on the problem machine. Is this
warning box turned on/off with a registry setting?
