IE or something else

Situation:

We have an issue where:

The same hyperlink address (to a doc on a file server) in either native app,
a Word doc or a PDF works just fine.

However, if you open the same docs via IE 6.x (XP/SP2) and choose the same
hyperlink(s) in those docs, the source url folder (on a web server) is
appended to the front of the hyperlink. Thus returning a 404 error. In the
address bar, we see that IE tried to resolve something to the effect:

The hyperlink propertiy in Word is a file:// link. The hyperlink
destination is an .xls file on a domain lan directory. The document(s)
originated in Word and were converted to the PDF. The original hyperlink was
chosen through the hyperlink dialog box and worked until about a month ago.
We recently rolled out XP SP2 to a large number of people... may be related,
the users can't tell us for sure. This is impacting hundreds of documents.

Suggestions on where to start? Has anyone heard of something similar?
This does not have to do with the "ignore other apps" box in Excel or the
"browse in new window" option. It is simply that the files (on an IIS
server) have their own url folder appended to the links in those documents.
Is there an issue linking from a file on a web server to a file on a lan
server?

for WinXP.

I had a look at the difference in Security - One thing that stood out was an
option in IE6 sp2 for xp was a Security Option to 'Allow scripting of
Internet Explorer Webbrowser control' (so thats why some of my button
scripts don't work! Ureka)

I think this may be a possible cause as your PDF documents containing the
Hyperlinks will use scripting or some other method to pass the URL to the
web browser for it to navigate to and open the document.

Another guess is to check that in the Intranet Zone settings, Sites button
that you have the option to 'Include UNC paths...' selected.

I hope I have been of assistance. My money is on the first explanation.

I checked those settings as suggested, but those settings were correct.
Could a change in the web server hosting the files that have the links impact
this? I don't know if we have other documents to test on our web server
trying to link back to files on a lan server.
