IE in XPSP2 verrry slow

It takes about 60 seconds for IExplorer in XP SP2 just to
load to "about blank," which is my default screen. I can get
on to the internet but it takes at least 30 seconds to get
to any home page. Any command or adjustment within IE6 is
slow, such as GO accepting a left click to connect. It takes
about ten seconds for a menu window to drop, such as
"tools." I've run spybot and adaware with no hits. I use
Pc-Cillin for AV and the firewall.

I've cleaned out the temporary files, run scandisk (and
defragged). I've removed IE with add/remove. Rebooted,
reinstalled it, rebooted, yet no go.

On the other hand, my use of Mozilla is unimpeded. It opens
immediately and connects almost instantaneously. So this is
not a problem with my network or connection.

Windows Explorer is working as expected. All other
applications are working normally.

I am dubious about uninstalling SP2, since I fear it will
somehow mess up the rest of my system.

Any other insights or ideas?
