ie has encounted a problem

When i try to go onto some web sites a box comes up and says-- ie has
encounted a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience. i
have looked at the forums already and cleared all my history ect ect but this
still seems to be happening, can any one help me its driving me crazy???

Has windows updates been done?
What virus scan?
What version of Windows?

yes i have windows up dates, my computer does them automatically
i have AVG virus program running and all is up to date, i also have error
gaurd and spybot search witch i use all the time.
i have windows xp
