About a minute after opening IE, I get the following
error.

See if this helps:

Open Internet Explorer, go to the Tools==>Internet Options===>Advanced,
scroll down to find the 'Enable third party browser extensions'. If the box
is checked, then UNCHECK it. Click APPLY, OK, and then shutdown IE and
launch it again and the problem should be solved. You may lose some toolbars
or IE 'third party' functions that you had previously.

After you may want to check your computer for Spyware:

Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org - FAQ, Help & Forum @ Site.
Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoft.de/ - FAQ, Help & Forum @ Site.

Windows Updates - Update Windows regularly (at the very least once a
month) - ALWAYS download Critical Updates. You can set your computer for
automatic updates if you prefer.

You can re-enable the 3rd party toolbar function once your system is clean.
