IE doesn't get home page

When I push the IE button on the Quick Launch bar its window is opened with
the following text in its address bar
http://files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe
and "The page cannot be displayed" results.

I use the following home page address
http://www.msn.com/
that is written in Internet Options/General/Home page. Everything is OK if I
start IE from the Start menu.
I use Windows XP Pro sp2 and IE6.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,

Try the following:

--
Click [Start] [Run] Type any of the following command and press Enter
"Rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll,BrandCleanInstallStubs"
or
"Rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll,Clear"
--
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#Branding

This should also serve to clear the defaults.

Please post back regarding your success or failure :)

Regards,

Altrus

Nothing happened after both command you suggested were executed!
I have also to add that when I try to start the IE from Start/All
Programs/Internet Explorer or by doble click Program Files/Internet
Explorer/iexplore.exe I get the same result i.e. its window is opened with
: the following text in its address bar
: http://files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe
: and "The page cannot be displayed" results.
How can one find out what command is executed when one push the Internet
button on Start menu?

Hi,

What happens when you do the following:

Open Internet Explorer.
Click on Tools, Internet Options.

Click on the Advanced Tab.
Click on the 'Restore Defaults' Button.

Click on the Programs Tab.
Click on the Reset Web Settings.

Click on the Security Tab.
Click on the Default Settings Button.

Click on to exit Internet Explorer.

Restart your computer. Is it fixed?

Alternatively, try the following:

Click on Start, Find.
Type IExplore.exe

Click on the result located in c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.

What location does it bring up? The default?

Best regards,

Altrus

I am sorry but I can't use your suggestion. I've made System Restore and
everything is OK now. For me it says that something was wrong in registry. I
do not think that it was a virus because I use Spybot and Ad-Aware daily and
my antivirus program works well too. Though... Thank you for your tries to
help me!!!
BTW I did use your second alternative (did I?) when I try to start the IE by
double click Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe as I wrote in the
previous communication. Today is works good. Thank you!
