IE Crashing

L

Larry Mauriello

I hope someone can assist on this. For the past few days I seem to get
intermittant failures when opening website via IE 6.
I have tried uninstalling the Yahoo Toolbar as I have read this can
sometimes cause probs. But I still get the failures.
Now I don't get any specific msg. But when I click the Send Report info.
link it seems to point to urlmon.dll.
I did a search and found it listed 4x. 2 from 2002 and the other 2 from 2
mos. ago.

It seems to point to a hidden folder w/INet Temp files. Can these files be
deleted safely? Many appear to be coolies.
This is an XP Sp2 pc. I have done scans for spyware and viruses and come up
clean. It seems this happened after last wkes MS updates. There were a # of
them so I can't even point to 1 in particular. Any assistance is apprec.

TIA

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I've seen reports that making the registry edit in this article can resolve
this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367
If the registry edit alone isn't the cure, obtain and install the hotfix.

It would be a good idea to create a Restore Point or backup (export) the
registry before editing it.

Hope this helps,
Don

Gerry,
I don't quite follow what you want me to post a copy of. I opened the Event
Viewer I saw a LOT of failure msgs. and a lot of Warnings for MSInstaller.
The Errors just say Appl. Error. Do you want to know what is there from the
same time stamp?
Maybe you can be a bit more clear. I am not real technical, but have a fair
background.

Thanks

Don, Mark,

Right now IE won't even stay open for me to read the articles. Seems like
somethng is really out of wack here.
Maybe someone can follow up on Gerry's suggestion? Thanks

Please post copies of Warning and Error Reports in the order they appear
for the last time you booted the machine so that we can interpret what
they mean

Hi,
In Add or remove programs, check the Show Updates box then uninstall
KB942615.

Then see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627

Or, can you access that KB article from the address bar of Windows Explorer?

Or, using Windows Explorer or another browser...
From MVP Ottmar Freudenberger:
In the meantime I've uploaded the registry fix on my little web site the
other day: http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/IE6SP2_urlmon_dll-Crash.zip
The zip file contains "IE6SP2_Hotfix_KB942367_aktivieren.reg" which will
import the neccessary "registry hack" into the registry after double
clicking on it and letting it merge into the registry.
"IE6SP2_Hotfix_KB942367_deaktivieren.reg" is included in the zip file too
which will remove the registry keys again in case someone needs too.

Don,
I do know how to add/remove a specific program. I AM having probs. getting
IE to stay open to read the KB articles.
Are you suggesting that I should look for an update for KB942615 and remove
it. Sorry but I don't quite follow. What was KB942615 for, and why would it
cause probs. Not that MS patches are not known to cause probs. <g>.

IF I do uninstall how do I ensure it doesn't reinstall on the next MS update
(next wk)?

Gerry, as I said last night there are a LOT of Red Errors and a lot of
Yellow msgs.
Are you asking me to copy ea. entry w/todays date? There are days worth. You
are looking for

Sorry for sounding clueless. But am not sure what I should copy/paste.

Just copy and paste say the first dozen until I see what they are I
cannot help. Start with the ones immediately after you started to boot.
The System Reports are usually more important.

Hi,
This update, KB942615, has been causing the problem you're having. If you
uninstall it, you can read the article and/or download the fix I posted.
After you apply the fix, it won't be a problem if KB942615 installs again in
January or sooner.

You could also download a backup browser, such as Firefox. ;-)

Hey Don,
I found the patch you mentioned. Before I uninstall look at todays patch. I
found it mentioned in the info. on the patch in question.

Known issues
After you install security update 942615 on a computer that is running
Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 may crash when you
try to visit a Web site. For more information, click the following article
number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
946627 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627/) Internet Explorer 6 crashes
after you install security update 942615 on a computer that is running
Windows XP Service Pack 2

It looks like 946627 is to address this issue? Should I just try today's
patch and leave the old one. Or ignore today's and remove the one in
question (dated 12/12).?

Btw, I did d/l FF but havn't yet installed it. <g>.

Thanks again for your help.

"IE6SP2_Hotfix_KB942367_deaktivieren.reg" is included in the zip file too
which will remove the registry keys again in case someone needs too.
Don, Mark,

Right now IE won't even stay open for me to read the articles. Seems like
somethng is really out of wack here.
Maybe someone can follow up on Gerry's suggestion? Thanks

Hi,
I've seen reports that making the registry edit in this article can
resolve
this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942367
If the registry edit alone isn't the cure, obtain and install the
hotfix.

It would be a good idea to create a Restore Point or backup (export)
the
registry before editing it.
I hope someone can assist on this. For the past few days I seem to get
intermittant failures when opening website via IE 6.
I have tried uninstalling the Yahoo Toolbar as I have read this can
sometimes cause probs. But I still get the failures.
Now I don't get any specific msg. But when I click the Send Report
info.
link it seems to point to urlmon.dll.
I did a search and found it listed 4x. 2 from 2002 and the other 2
from
2 mos. ago.

It seems to point to a hidden folder w/INet Temp files. Can these
files
be
deleted safely? Many appear to be coolies.
This is an XP Sp2 pc. I have done scans for spyware and viruses and
come up
clean. It seems this happened after last wkes MS updates. There
were a
# of
them so I can't even point to 1 in particular. Any assistance is
apprec.

TIA

Hey Don,
I found the patch you mentioned. Before I uninstall look at todays
patch. I found it mentioned in the info. on the patch in question.

Known issues
After you install security update 942615 on a computer that is running
Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 may crash
when you try to visit a Web site. For more information, click the
following article number to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base: 946627 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627/)
Internet Explorer 6 crashes after you install security update 942615
on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2

It looks like 946627 is to address this issue? Should I just try
today's patch and leave the old one. Or ignore today's and remove the
one in question (dated 12/12).?

Btw, I did d/l FF but havn't yet installed it. <g>.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
This update, KB942615, has been causing the problem you're having.
If you uninstall it, you can read the article and/or download the
fix I posted. After you apply the fix, it won't be a problem if
KB942615 installs again in
January or sooner.

You could also download a backup browser, such as Firefox. ;-)

Are you suggesting that I should look for an update for KB942615

for, and why would it cause probs. Not that MS patches are not
known to cause probs. <g>. IF I do uninstall how do I ensure it

Hi,
In Add or remove programs, check the Show Updates box then
uninstall KB942615.

Then see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627

Or, can you access that KB article from the address bar of Windows
Explorer?

Or, using Windows Explorer or another browser...
From MVP Ottmar Freudenberger:
In the meantime I've uploaded the registry fix on my little web

Hi,
Sorry, I lost track of this thread. Yes, downloading the revised update
946627
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...93-367D-4D28-80AB-2A70139AE839&displaylang=en
should resolve the issues with 942615 without uninstalling 942615.
