IE^ causes error in user.exe

Hi..hope someone can help me! After signing onto a yahoo mail/messenger
service I started getting the above message and then it closes. I read
someone else posted same message and someone suggested:

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit is with these
tools.

However, I can't even access the tool bars for IE they are grayed out
and only thing I can do is close the program. I tried resetting to an
earlier set point, going back to 5.5 and finally downloading IE 6. the
microsoft help page appears useless.

I would greatly appreciate the help!
