I have Windows ME and....

I am unable to do the following: 1) download items from
the Internet, other than the Microsoft site 2) save
graphics off the Internet as anything other than .bmp 3)
Flash Player portions of pages will not load although I do
have Flash Player 7 installed 4) the box that used to
popup in OE when you wanted to save a file asking where to
save it no longer appears.

This started with IE 5.5. I cleared Temporary Files, ran
Scandisk, cleared out oem files, ran my spyware/adware
programs, defraged...did all the things the Microsoft
Knowledge Data Base said to do. Nothing worked. So I
then decided to install IE 6.0 to see if that would solve
the problem....it didn't and I again did all
the "solutions". Still not working correctly.

What can I do now other than wipe out my hard drive
entirely and start completely over?

check your security settings

Thanks but I'm smart enough and computer literate enough
to have checked that before anything else.

Does anyone have a real suggestion?

Hi Krys :-)

Try the following and see if it helps.

1) download items from
the Internet, other than the Microsoft site 2)

2) save
graphics off the Internet as anything other than .bmp

JPG's will only save as BMP's

Quetions - which may apply to 3 & 4

Do you have Norton Antivirus?

Do you have a pop-up blocker.

Do you have SpywareBlaster? This could be your Flash problem..let me know.

Hope this helps.

Jan :)

Thank you Jan....I had already tried all of those things
and they haven't worked. I run Norton's Anti-Virus but
I've shut it off and still can't get Flash Player to work,
besides it was working fine with my anti-virus program on
just a week ago. :o( I don't even have the other two
items you mentioned so that's not the problem either.

I'm beginning to think that there is no solution available
other than re-formatting my hard drive and starting over
with a clean slate. *shudders* Any idea how I do that?

Thanks again,
Krys

Thank you Charlie. I had already tried the suggestions
listed there but appreciate you trying to give me
something I hadn't tried before.

Hi Krys :-)

Before you go to the extreme of a wipe and reinstall, try a repair and see
if that helps. If you don't have XP or vise versa, then disregard those
instructions. Also, set your security to Medium or Low and see if that
helps.

Repair Internet Explorer

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled before starting:

The Internet Explorer Repair Tool

or......

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled:

Method 2 in this article works on earlier versions of Windows.

XP

or.................

If you have not already done so, then you might try a repair of IE6 as
follows:

or

For XP Repair of IE -

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

or......................

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the
quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.) Have your XP CD handy
and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it takes a while. This will do
the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a lot more, that is find any corrupt
system files and replace them. It does not, however, re-register the
various software components (except possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files from
certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To check for
this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter "qfecheck /v /l:c:\"
(without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck installed, it can be
obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on XP
(but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair if you
don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it works
there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might want to give
it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run without the
quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing IE6/OE6:

XP (Q318378)

Here is a more recent suggestion I have been giving to XP users
who want to try some repair procedures.

<TITLE>831429 - Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from
Windows Update</TITLE>

It is actually a more comprehensive set of re-registrations than an
IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.

Although they are listed specifically for W2K they should apply
equally to XP.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
You've cleared the cache- have you deleted the TIF folder?

Are you sure that another program isn't causing this?
A firewall, security-type program, toolbar, Yahoo companion, download
manager, ad-blocker, etc.
