IE 6 Will Not Open

P

Parker

Hello All,

I have a client that needs to use IE6 for our intranet apps. The browser
will not open, it just hangs. I have run Symantec Corporate VS,
Spybot,AdAware,Microsoft Beta all up to date and all were run in safe mode.
Virus Scan found 3 trojans, and all other "crap-ware" was deleted with the
adware programs then repeated the drill. Still no happiness. I installed
SP2 on the machine. Then it worked briefly. Then it hung again a few hours
later. I tried to get the remaining security updates but still no
happiness. I ran sfc/scannow which came up with no problems. Tried HiJack
This which had no jackings. I'm am now completely at a loss. Any Ideas or
should I uninstall and reinstall IE6!?!

Thanks In Advance for Any Help

Hi Parker,

Thanks for posting!

My understanding on the issue is: Internet Explorer 6.0 hangs when it is
opened. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please do not hesitate to
let me know.

I would like to provide you with some information for your reference:

You may attempt to fix winsock, please refer to the following article:
How to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

For your convenience, I would like to provide the main part of above
article for you:

How to Recover from Winsock2 corruption

To resolve this issue, delete the corrupted registry keys, and then
reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.

Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and
then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note: Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so
causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for
those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the
Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Important: This post contains information about modifying the registry.
Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For
information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the
following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base:

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=256986

Step 2: Install TCP/IP

1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),
and then click OK.
7. Restart the computer.

Let me provide you with some third-party tools for your reference:

Thank You Jason,

I have tried the WinSockFix that was a download. Is that program a
different fix than the WinSock2 you are referring to? If so I certainly
will try it. I've also found that when trying to start IE6 that it starts a
process but doesn't open IE. Then when trying again it will open IE and
start another process. When using that intranet program for the company I
get a caching error 3, then a runtime error 6026, then it closes IE but
allows the intranet program to continue. It is then possible to open
another browser and it will start yet another process. I did load
Mozilla/Forefox browser to see if it was a Winsock problem and it works just
fine. I'm still stumped! Any other suggestions? If the Winsock and the
Winsock2 are different I will try your suggestion.
Thank You Again for Your Response Jason

Hi Parker,

Thanks for your patient and understanding!

According to the article: How to determine and recover from Winsock2
corruption
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

You may determine whether the Winsock2 key is corrupted. If the Winsock2
key is determined to be corrupted, both the method mentioned in the KB
811259 and the third-party tools can be treated as referenced solution.
However, Based on the current situation, please help me to confirm some
information on your side.

Step 1: Can the issue be reproduced in Clean Boot environment?
========================================================
Let's first perform a Clean Boot to disable all the third party services
and start-ups to test the issue:

1. Click the "Start" and select "Run".
2. Type msconfig in the open box, and then click "OK".
3. On the "Services" tab, click to choose "Hide All Microsoft Services" and
click to choose Disable All.
4. On the Startup page, click Disable All.
5. Click "OK" to reboot your computer.
6. When you see the message, choose "Don't show this message or launch the
System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click OK.

Note: A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs
that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict.

If the issue can be reproduced in Clean Boot environment, please go to step
2.

Step 2: Can the issue be reproduced in Safe Mode with Networking
environment?
===============================================================

1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On
a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems,
you can press the F8 key when you see the Boot Menu.

2. In "Windows Advanced Option Menu", use the arrow keys to select Safe
Mode with Networking, and then press ENTER.

3. If you are running other operating systems on the computer, click
Microsoft Windows on the list that is displayed and then press ENTER.

Please let me know the result at your earliest convenience. Thanks for your
time. If there is anything that is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Thank You Again Jason. IE6 does work fine in safe mode with networking. I
do not get any error messages when booting up normal. I have reinstalled
IE6 from ie.inf in the windows folder and reinstalled SP2. It seems to
work better but when starting IE, the first time it does not open, the
second time it does open but now has 2 processes running. I have not tried
to do the clean boot as of now.

Thanks Again for Your Assistance
