IE 6 will not open but runs error report

Hi
Periodically, after a normal boot up, I will double click IE and instead of
opening an error report window opens and this will go on forever. I will do a
normal shutdown and reboot and most of the time IE will open. There can be up
to (6) months between episodes and it does not appear that any thing has
changed in IE. Nor has there been any other incident taking place that would
effect the OS that I'm aware of. This is a scary situation and I would
appreciate any help I can get to obtain a lasting solution to this problem.
