IE 6 SP1 breaks on images

Here's an exampel of a page where images load automatically in NN 7
but just show placeholders until you explicitly download the image
with the right-click menu in IE 6 SP 1.

It's obviously the fault of IE 6 SP1, and nothing else, because NN 7
handles it fine, on the same system, as probably would IE 5.5, if I
decide to jettison IE 6 in favor of that.n

Mark, I have exactly the same problem. Did you ever find
a fix? This drives me nuts and there is no reference in
the FAQ to the problem except for Mac images. Dave

And no one on this ng likely knows. And M$ support tends to come by
way of official fixes. So you have to be told there's a 'hotfix', or
whatever. Otherwise, one wouldn't know.

I liked IE 5.5, a lot. IE 6, not so much. Luckily I've got NN 7. The
last time I said I was glad to have NN was somewhere between NN 3 and
NN 4.7. So, it's been awhile.

NTF. Do you have the latest IE cumulative update installed?
What version of mshtml.dll do you have active?

<title>KB817177 - Image Files Do Not Appear When You View a Web Page with Internet Explorer 6 SP1</title>

There is at least one .jpg used to create the background for that page
but I don't know if it is one of the ones which that article addresses.

In any case the mshtml.dll in the latest cumulative update 824145
seems to supersede the hotfix version.

Other people had the same problem. Are you saying it works just as it
does in NN 7 in your version of IE 6?

NTF == No Trouble Found.

That means that I saw no image placeholders and wasn't aware of anything
which might have been missing. All of the mouseovers (that I tried) worked.
I tried to inspect the source but I suspect that some of the structure is contained
in a Javascript file.

I don't have Netscape to compare with. Can you be more specific about
which image(s) you are getting placeholders for? As I mentioned the only
one that I can see is the one for the (stucco) background.

Oh. I think I see now what you are complaining about.
You wanted me to click on those buttons? ;o

Would the technique mentioned here help as a workaround?

<title>KB318382 - The document.open Method with Replace Does Not Work in Frameset</title>

(MSKB Boolean search for
innerhtml AND kbie600sp1fix
)

Other workarounds might be available via a more general search.
InnerHTML support for IE seems to be "under construction". ;)
At least they seem to be gradually reducing the severity of the bugs
associated with their implementation:

<title>KB269802 - BUG: Internet Explorer Stops Responding When You Download Images</title>

(MSKB Boolean search for
innerhtml AND kbiesearch
) - 42 hits

Note that there is not much programming expertise in this newsgroup.
You might get a better answer from one which web designers frequent.

And just a placeholder appears in IE 6. In IE 5.5, it shows the image,
just as with NN.

So, they did something to IE 6, added some 'feature', that they
thankfully didn't provide with IE 5.5.

Again, I'm grateful I have NN 7 installed. The last time I could say I
preferred NN was around the time of 3 and 4.7. Once I saw IE 5.5, I
went with that completely. Now, I don't know.

817177
....
Has anybody gotten this fix yet?

Robert,

If you are going to reopen threads which are over a month old
please at least include a relevant quote. (With the new web interface
to newsgroups that you are using you need to click on a button
after you open your reply window.)

Did you not understand my point?

In fact, since then there has been a further update to mshtml.dll
Now you should have 6.0.2800.1400 from 832894

If you do have that version and still have a problem I suspect that
it is something other than the problem being described by 817177.

FWIW I do have that newer version and have retested using Mark's page

and still see the same symptom. (I.e., clicking on any of his links results
in a placeholder which must be further stimulated by right-click, Show Picture
in order to see the animated graphic. As these graphics are not all .jpg
Mark's problem can not be the same as the problem described by 817177.

No I guess I didn't get your point, and still don't. Sorry if I cause you any issues, but I had never used this site before and was only trying to pass on some information and maybe get a fix.

Did realy expect to be chastized by you for it

Good day
