IE 6 refuses to open any site / adress

Hi
I run a XPP-SP2 machine in a network (win 2003 SBS). It worked fine 'since
ages'.
Since a few days IE responds to any URL.
with

- "server not found" in the title line
- "the requested page can not be shown"
- it says at the end of the page: server or DNS not found

It makes no difference if
- I type an external adress as an IP adress like 207.46.19.60 or as an URL
like www.microsoft.com, with or without a preceeding http://
- I try to access local adresses e.g. the local router with the local IP
adress
- I'm logged in as 'normal user' or as administrator
- I run XP in 'full','diagnostic' or 'secure' mode

In addition:
- nothing has been installed on the machine recently (except automatic
updates)
- if I go to the command level and check: ipconfig / all shows the correct
parameters incl. gateway and DNS servers (the machine gets it from DHCP, all
other PCs in the network are ok)
- I can ping within the lokal network and external adresses, nslookup and
tracert results are correct, DNS resolution is correct
- Windows firewall is deactivated (external HW - firewall at the gateway)
- Symantec Antivirus Corp. Edition, current signatures, reports no viruses
- MS AntiSpam Agent reports no spamming
- the PC works fine with all other network resources like file servers and
printers
- I can access the PC from outside using VPN
- I re-set all IE parameters etc. to 'standard'
- re- install of IE didn't help
- I moved the PC in a company in the neighbourhood in their network: no
difference (all other PCs in their network work of course)

I would be very happy about a hint
:)
thanks
Christian Bernard

MS Anti-Spam doesn't catch everything.

First eliminate any spyware.
