Hello,
My browser will not allow me to type in addresses and
click the "Go" button, or use the drop down history.
IE6 "hangs", and becomes non responsive, resulting in me
ending the program manually. All other aspects are
functioning properly, and I have downloaded all recent
service packs and XP updates. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
Thanks,
WWM

1. When did the problem begin, after installing or
uninstalling software or hardware, or out of the blue?

2. "All other aspects are functioning properly." Other
apsects of what, IE, Windows?

3. Have you scanned for viruses? Are your definitions up
to date?

4. You may have to donload "Spybot Search & destroy" and /
or Ad-aware onto another computer, burn the files to a
CD / DVD , then install 1 or both onto the computer with
the problem.

5. Is your ISP dialup or high speed?

Hi,
In addition to the excellent tips from Ed.
Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

This might be an autocomplete problem. Clear the History from Internet
Options> General. If unsuccessful with that, delete the History folder. See:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

Thanks very much for your tips. Here is some more
specific information and and answers.
First, I have XP Home, with three user profiles. The
primary one we log onto all the time has this issue with
IE locking up, which happened suddenly last week. I have
a broadband/cable modem connection.

When I say all aspects, I mean I can use IE, my Favorites
work, forward/back buttons work, the only thing is I
can't paste or manually type addresses, which results in
this lock up problem. My PC functions fine, and all my
scans have come up clean.
If I switch users, to another profile not used as much,
IE has no issues with me typing or pasting into the
address bar.
I have Adaware 6.0, and Norton Antivirus, both of which
are up to date. After posting my question last night, I
did try to simply clear my history under "Tools>>Internet
Options", and clicking the Clear History button. This
caused the same "Not Responding" error. In addition,
trying to access, or even delete my Temp. Internet Files
folder under the user profile we use all the time causes
Windows Explorer to lock. So my guess is something
contained in the History/Temp folder in this profile
isn't getting removed/detected by adaware.

I will try to get to CWShredder, etc, but I can't
copy/paste your link below, so I'll need to Google for
it. I will also attempt to delete my History folder for
this profile.

Thanks again for both replies, I will post again when I
return Sunday.

it does sound like a bug, spybot 1.3 and A2 are good
programs, have you scaned for trojans, some av scans will
not detect these or malware. or try restore, or safe,
last good config. luck

Thank you,

Does a system restore remove programs, or do anything
drastic? I may try that before possibly having to
purchase better spy-ware detection.
Thanks
WWM
