I've read several articles (posts) describing the fix necessary to fix a
"branded" browser. I have a similar instance on a relatives machine running
IE-6, on Windows ME. It appears that the recommended fix calls for editing
the registry. My question is; Is this a job for someone not used to kicking
around in the bowels of the operating system? I feel very comfortable with
computers and can readily adjust settings of most software packages. I have
installed all my own software including several minor fixes to Win 98.etc. I
have printed the articles on the basics of backing-up and restoring the
registry, however the fix described on the windows site is not that crystal
clear to me. It states Go to Start | Run and type: rundll32.exe
iedkcs32.dll,clear
Is this all there is to it, or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

Jim,
This will almost always work.
Go to Start | Run and type:
rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

It really is that easy (usually.) In fact, it's even safer to have the user
copy and paste that line into "Run"

Don

In addition:

"Rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll, BrandCleanInstallStubs"

This command is almost the same. But, this removes resets the Windows Update menu text as well.

Mr. Ramesh,

Thanks for the information. Could you advise if the command line you
recommend will clear the Favourites file as a well as all the security and
preference settings currently enabled in the browser.

Thanks again.

Hi Jim,

This command does not clear the browser security/policy settings, but resets Window Title, toolbar image and more.

To remove the browser restrictions, try: "Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs".http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k

To reset the Security settings, you can just go to the tab and choose 'reset defaults'. There is a method which can set everything to default, but i can't recommend until i test it thoroughly.

Dear Mr. Ramesh,

I executed the command as you described. Nothing happened ! I tried several
different command lines, still nothing. (i.e C:\\windows\ Rundll32
Iedkcs32.dll, BrandCleanInstallStubs
C:\\windows\system32\ Rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll, BrandCleanInstallStubs
C:\\ win_me\Rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll, BrandCleanInstallStubs

What am I doing worng?

To reset the Security settings, you can just go to the tab and choose 'reset

can't recommend until i test it thoroughly.

Jim,

This command actually resets the browser customizations (toolbar image, search url, title, windowsupdate url etc). If you mean, they are not resets with iedkcs32.dll command, try this one (without a space after the comma..........)
----------------------------------------------
rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll,BrandCleanInstallStubs
rundll32 Iedkcs32.dll,Clear
----------------------------------------------
If this does not help, you may want to delete the keys in the registry manuall. Some of which are:
Per-user setting :
~~~~~~~~~~~
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Use Custom Search URL
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Window Title
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Help_Menu_URLs\Online_Support
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\BrandBitmap
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\SmBrandBitmap
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\BackBitmap
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\BackBitmapIE5
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\SmallBitmap
\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\BigBitmap
\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Windows Update Menu Text
To apply the changes to to multiple units, you could probably create a REG and distribute across.
