I have installed a clean version of Win XP on my computer
which formerly had ME. Now IE6 will not allow downloads
from any FTP site, but will download anywhere else. I
contacted MS and they emailed me a hot patch which did
not work. After 3 hours of hold time (they actually put
me on a queue for the wrong dept and wouldn't put me at
the top of the queue for the right dept after being on
hold for 1 1/2 hours) I gave up. Any help from someone
who has had the same problem would be appreciated. I give
up on MS support (or lack thereof).
Thanks,
Brian

When you say "clean install" did you upgrade your Windows ME installation
(which migrated all your user settings, etc) or did you wipe your hard drive
and install WinXP from scratch?

Personally, I avoid OS upgrades as a general rule. Often they work
flawlessly, but problems occur with enough frequency to make upgrades more
of a gamble than they're worth.

Before you begin mucking with IE issues, have you tried to use an actual FTP
utility to ensure that there's not something wrong there (Like a
misconfigured firewall blocking traffic on Port 21)? Windows comes with a
command line FTP utility, or you can download one of many from
www.tucows.com. I use Prishtina FTP myself. It's a little light on features,
but its a) freeware and b) quite free of any spyware often found in other
FTP utilities.
