IE 6.0 SP1 Install - Error - Previous Install/Reboot

Jon Hess

I am trying to upgrade from IE 5.5SP2 to IE 6.0 SP1. When I try the
install, I get an error message stating a previous version has been
installed and a reboot is required. I remember seeing a fix for this
problem, but cannot find it now. I think this requires a REG edit?

Thank you.

There is no such thing as a REG Edit.

Regedit is a program that edits two files user.dat &
system.dat (Registry)

<title>KB303399 - You Cannot Finish Installing or Upgrading Internet Explorer</title>
< http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303399 >

Unfortunately it seems that this article is not properly indexed.
The only way that I could find it with a reasonable search was
by using:
Products: -- All Microsoft Products --
Search for: install AND restart AND boot AND kbie600search
Using: Boolean...
Search type: Full text
Date range: Anytime

BTW giving an even more logical search argument of
install AND (restart OR boot) AND kbie600search
results in it being lost near the bottom of a 57 item result page
TechNet in contrast orders this page first with that search.

Google was even more useless in trying to find it with a generic search
because it apparently doesn't index any of the TechNet indexing keywords.
(That's kind of understandable because the keywords don't show up
in the body of the web pages though they are usable under the Advanced
search and do show up in the META NAME="Keywords" element
of the page's HEAD section.)

BTW while I was experimenting with this I got a prompt from Google
asking how they could improve their service; so I clued them in about
this hidden keywords issue.
