IDX files

mik

I have discovered that I have 1287 IDX files on my non operating
system partition which is used only for download ant they are all the
same size- 32 bytes.
I dont use IE or Outlook express (using Firefox and Thunderbird)

Plus I now have two NEW folders on EVERY partition (7 on two drives)
which were NEVER THERE BEFORE:
1- RECYCLER ( which cointains the recycling bin but it's name is not
the "Recycle bin" as one that I have on desktop but
S-1-5-21-1177238915-1801674531-839522115-1003.
2- System volume information folder which I cannot access - Access is
denied

Where they could come from and what can I do?
I am using two antivirus programs and they found nothing.

Thanks

Did you turn on show hidden and system files? The system volume information
folder is a hidden folder associated with System Restore. It is always
there if SR is enabled on that drive.

..idx files have nothing to do with Outlook Express 6 in XP, OE6 uses .dbx
files.

Avg7 creates .idx files, I have two, u-bck.idx and log.idx

Visual FoxPro and Exchange Server use .idx files. So does AOL. So does
Symantec. Symantec Q&A Relational Database Index File.

Look here and maybe something will jog your memory.

File Extension Details for .IDX
http://www.filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=idx

I wonder if the Indexing service uses .idx files?

The Indexing service uses the Cidaemon.exe process to index files. The
Cidaemon.exe process builds and updates the Index catalog.

Yes I have installed AVG7 but there is something strange:
-AVG7 installed Oct 13
-IDX files ALL 1287 dated Nov 4
-You said that you have 2 IDX files - I have 1287 named
CA00.IDX...CT64.IDX...CTF9.IDX...ST33.IDX...STUC.IDX
-The are all on partition H: while oS and AVG installation is on C: ?

I haven't find any other info on
http://www.filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=idx

And yes I did turn on show hidden and system files.

Thanks

Also, this page lists every *.idx file that you mentioned and more. But

Each hard disk or partition contains a hidden folder named Recycler. The
Recycler folder is used only on NTFS partitions. On FAT32 the RECYCLED
folder is used. The Recycler folder contains a Recycle Bin for each user
that logs on to the computer, sorted by their security identifier (SID).

Windows allocates one Recycle Bin for each partition or hard disk. If your
hard disk is partitioned, or if you have more than one hard disk in your
computer, you can specify a different size for each Recycle Bin.

You can configure the drives Recycle Bin Properties independently or use one
setting for all drives. Right click Recycle Bin | Properties | Global tab |
* Configure drives independently
* Use one setting for all drives
* Do not move files to the Recycle Bin
* Maximum size of Recycle Bin (percent of each drive)
* Display delete confirmation dialog

%systemdrive%\RECYCLER
With at least one folder with the SID #
for every user on the machine.

If there is only one user, then there is only one
SID # folder. That SID # folder is the Recycle Bin.

Security identifiers (SIDs) are numeric values that identify a user or
group.

This registry key lists all of the SIDs.

To tell which user has which SID, click on each SID, look at
ProfileImagePath, the Data has the user name at the end of the path. I.e.
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Wesley P. Vogel

For example:
S-1-5-18 is systemprofile
S-1-5-19 is NT Authority/ LocalService
S-1-5-20 is NT Authority/NetworkService

..idx files are usually created by a whole variety of database engines to
allow fast searching. Generally when data is entered into a database it
is in a random order and yet the chances are you want look at it in a
more logical order once you have entered it into the database. So an
'INDex' file is created which enables this fast searching. In most
databases you can elect to switch indexing on or off. With fast pc's
these days 'on' is the default.
Also indexes that XP use are part of the file, something like an
attribute for fast searching and so on.
XP does not create standalone index files. These files are NOT part of
the operating system and are safe to delete.

From what I find on google:
They are nero audio database files, at some point nero has asked for a
folder to keep the music cd database files in and you choose c:\. Go into
nero preferences then database and untick the user database path.
If these are from nero, they can be deleted.
