Identical filenames

C

confused!

I have two computers. I published from www to desktop
just fine. I tried to publish same www web to laptop with
XP pro and I get message:

"You specified identical destination filenames for some
of the files you are trying to copy. Make sure all of
destination files have unique names."

I make a new name for the destination web so there are
not any files. I see that the _private and images get
created. What confuses me is that if there was a problem
with the source files, wouldn't I get error on other PC?

Thanks for info.

Yes, you should have received an error message when you published from the
www.

Why? If I publish from www web to new destination on PC
(there are no destination files yet created). I must be
very dense! Totally confused! Please explain!

The files are written to the temp folder or memory before actually being
written into the folder, so it is at that point Windows detects duplicate
filenames, and pass on the warning to FP.

So are you saying that there are duplicate filenames on
the source? If that is the case, how would duplicate
filenames get out on source www in the first place?
Please forgive me for not catching on right away. Or do I
have problem with files somehow on laptop which has XP
pro and server?

If the source (www) is Unix/Linux, then it is very easy to have duplicate
file names.

As an example, under Unix/Linux, index.htm and Index.htm and INDEX.HTM are
treated as 3 separate files, whereas under Windows, they are considered to
be one and the same.

So the easiest to detect problem would be to get into the
Folder View and sort by name and look for duplicate/match
disregarding Case (upper or lower).

This makes no sense to me. I am not disputing you. But I
can publish the www source to desktop computer with
Windows ME and have no problems. I try to publish same
www web to PC laptop with Windows XP pro and localhost is
set up, I get the filename error. It does not matter how
I change destination name, I still get the error on
laptop. I know you think I am crazy and have duplicate
filenames, but why can I publish on desktop with no
problem? I cannot find duplicate file names. I have
published to desktop PC more than once. I am not talking
about complicated website but simple church website. Oh
well, I will just work around the problem. I appreciate
all the insight you have given me.

I have selected "Don't Publish" on all files in www
source but two(green arrow is by them). I still cannot to
laptop. Could my Windows be messed up?
Puzzled!

Susan,

I believe you, however the only time I have ever seen this problem, it has
been when publishing from Unix/Linux back to a Windows machine.

However, try the following, then try publishing again.

Search for and delete any hidden/system .web files.
Delete the FP Temp folder in the Windows Temp folder.

Now if the above doesn't solve the issue, then try open the site in FP
directly on the remote server and in another FP window open the local site,
next in folder view on the remote server, select all files, copy and then
paste into your local open FP window for the local site.

Thank you Thomas! I deleted the .web folders and there
was no FP Temp folder to delete. I still obtain duplicate
file names. I can work around problem.

One thing that I noticed though is that when I obtain the
Publish dialog box (www files are on the left and
destination on the right). The www file folders _private
and images are not first consecutive two folders. I have
_private, other folders, then the images folder. In the
box for my destination, the _private, images are
generated as first two folders. Is this a problem? I
don't see this happen when I publish on my desktop PC
(Windows ME) with same website.

I thank everyone for their input. I also thank Jim Buyens
for his article:
http://www.interlacken.com/winnt/tips/tipshow.aspx?tip=24

I noticed in the Folder View of the remote site in the
folder list certain folders that were empty and one I
could not click + and expand. I went to Tools and
Recalculate Hyperlinks and clicked on that. Certain
folders disappeared. I could then Pulish to my PC.

I don't fully understand this because I would have
thought this would have changed the remote site. But when
I got on other PC, I had to do this again--unless garbage
was somehow left over on PCs?
