Identical database slow to load on one XP PC, but not another

Until recently I ran Access 2003 SP2 on an XP laptop, where I built up a
220mb database. After buying a new, much faster XP desktop, I installed the
same Office 2003 software, then downloaded all the XP and Office updates and
service packs.

But when I copied my Access database to the new PC, I found it takes as much
as a minute to load, and never less than 30secs. There are no error messages.

The same database, still on my old laptop, loads instantly (as always),
using the same software, but a slower processor. I've compacted both copies
several times, and even used the Jet compacter downloaded from the Access
site. I can't see any signs of file corruption.

Please, any advice?

Thanks, Allen -- I tried all of the suggestions from Tony Toews I could
understand, or which seemed to apply, but with no result. It's only when I
load the .mdb file that it's so slow to open -- once the db is loaded,
everything works fine.

If it's not any of the things from Tony's list then it could
be that WinXP's indexing is turned on for that hard disc but
off for the one on the laptop.

On stand alone machines my experience has been that it's
usually virus scanning, malware scanning, outlook
journalling or some other fairly heavy duty background
process eating processor and hd access. You've not got
anything like that running have you? Disk shadowing or
maybe a wrongly set up RAID controller?

I've uninstalled my virus scanner for these tests, but it's made no
difference. XP's indexing service is also running on the laptop, and always
has been on both PCs. No other Office, MS or non-MS application on the system
is taking a long time to launch, or seems in any way to be slowed down. I
scan manually for malware and spyware every couple of weeks, but there's no
automatic scan which I know of.

If I keep Task Manager/Processes open while my Access takes db takes its
40secs or more to load, System Idle Process never drops below 97% -- i.e. no
other process is taking up a heap of resources while Access is labouring to
load my database.

Could this have anything to do with a macro certificate? When I copied my
Access db to this PC, I was asked for a certificate. I created one myself and
installed it, but I don't understand that procedure very well, and could have
got something wrong.
