Ideas for large presentation

V

Vicky

I am trying to find some way to make a 200 - 225 slide presentation a little
more attractive. It is rather boring material and of course I am limiting
animation and such in order not to "bulk up" the presentation.

I thought of using hyperlinks and custom shows to break the presentation
into smaller segments. Currently it just flows from slide 1 - slide 217 (and
I am not 100% done yet)

Any thoughts or suggestions you can share?

Can you break the slides into a few sections? Then you can have a section
slide at the beginning of each section -- and you could make each section
look a little different by using a different color? However make sure that
the overall look of all slides is consistent.

If you calculate only 1 minute to talk about each slide, that would be
nearly 4 hours! I don't know the type of meeting you are planning and don't
know, how much time you have. But if this is a presentation which is
presented by a speaker, I would consider to put the essentials on slides and
show these. And put all the details on print-outs for the participants to
take home.

Best regards,
Ute

It depends on what is on the slides.
If it's photos, then you can have only a few lides with let say 10 photos on
each that makes only 20 slides

Vicky

This is used for a 2 day training presentation. If it were up to me I would
use a different media but this is what the client wants. Many slides could
be discussed for 10-15 minutes each! I know.. I know..

V

Vicky

Yes, there are 6 sessions, and I use a differnet design temp for the start of
each section.

Question, how much bulk will I incur by adding slide transitions, animationa
and possibly hyperlinks from the main agenda to the various sections?

V

Vicky

I agree, that wuld usually be my suggestion also but in this case it is
dictated by the client.

V

Vicky

I thought about doing that but I have already created seperate slides for
each. The presentation is mainly screen shots from several software
packages.

I don't think that animations, transitions and hyperlinks add much to the
file size. Is the file getting large and unwieldy?

Just to "Echo" Echo's comment ... I did some tests for a wary client
recently. Adding four complex animation sequences in 2007 bloated the file by
2 Kb.

Oh, I don't think you need to worry about animations or transitions or
hyperlinks adding too much, then.

I like to use triggers to keep my slides streamlined, yet give the
viewer/presenter the option to present supplemental information. For
example, I’ll color a word in a particular color along with a “button†on the
side to clue the viewer that additional information is available (it could be
a definition, a chart, etc.). In a self-paced PPT, this builds in some
interaction. In a live presentation, it enables the presenter to adjust time
by skipping information by not clicking on the buttons but you don’t have
that “um, let’s skip over the next few slides†thing.

Mouse roll-overs is another technique I like to hide a lot of information.
Your viewer thinks it’s just 1 slide but as you move your mouse over
sections, you’re exposing information on perhaps 30 slides. I used this to
describe different product families. The original had slide after slide
after slide of product and description. With the mouse over, you still got
the same information; it just didn't feel that way.

You mentioned that a lot of the presentation is screenshots. You can use
hyperlinks to “branch†the flow of your PPT so you’re simulating the process
flow an actual user would go through. This would give your presenter
flexibility in time and ability to zone in parts of the demonstration
(product) the audience were more curious about.

Lastly, since this is a live presentation, throw off your audience by
throwing in a quiz (again, I use triggers to pop up the right/wrong answers).
A quiz can either be an information review or a prelude to your topic (so
how many guessed…). It also is a fun way to bring in information and humor.
A “Jeopardy†type board (hyperlinks) is also a great way to get people to use
your printed material (so who can find the answer to this question…). We use
this to bring in a little competition while getting people to learn how to
use their resources.

200-225 slides are indeed boring. It's not wise to use too much
animation in your 200+ slides. 200 ++ slides are normally used by
academicians. If you prefer to use hyperlinks, i got an idea that can
cut-down all your slides a bit - probably 100 or half of your 200+
slides.
